So I'm Awaiting My Latest Purchase That I Bought On A Whim. Probably Due To Price

I haven't bought any knives in quite some time and then I made my return to this board and the fever kicked in again. Started out innocently enough, decided to just see what sort of deals where available while browsing Amazon and other sites, wasn't planning to buy anything.

Then I noticed a really good deal on a Spyderco Tenacious Plain Edge going for $29 delievered. Before I knew what happened I had just finished paying for it. Looks like my Spyderco collection is growing quite a bit now. Not sure if I'll like the Tenacious or not. I've got my Endura 4 as my EDC for the past several months so I'm not sure if it's going to take it's place in my pocket, probably not but you never can tell about these things.

So I guess I'm just going to wait and see, I'm expecting it on Thursday October 10. Anyway, should be interesting adding it to my growing Spyderco collection.

It is rare that I buy a folder without the Round Hole. The knives are excellent, customer service is great and the innovation is continual. The Tenacious gets good reviews but I have a hard time justifying it when I have a dozen other "high-end" Spydies vying for pocket time.

If I see something I like, and I can afford it, I buy it.
If I see something I like, and can't afford it, I'll fight with myself for hours and eventually break down and buy it.
If I see something I like, and really can't afford it, I'll buy it anyways but promise myself that I will sell off one or two of my other knives to afford it.... yeah thats the plan.

I do my best to limit my collection to less than 30 knives. I know to some that's alot, but that's nothing compared to others on this forum. I used to own almost 100 folders. But one day I realized that I don't carry 70% of them, so out they went. Now if I don't carry it, I don't keep it. Using that methodology with buying and selling I concentrate my collection to knives I really really like. You'd expect that only the highend ones to be left behind. And to some degree thats true but there are other lower cost knives that I still keep and carry right along with my Sebenza and other expensive pieces. I'll never be without a Kershaw Leek, or my Spyderco Delica.

Point is, if I like it, I like it. It doesn't matter how much it costs. So I often buy knives when I see killer deals on eBay. I don't mind reselling it if it's not for me, so hey why not?

Hey, it was only $29.00. I did the same thing as you last week but it was $130.00 for me.

I like my tenacious more than a delica or endura, I imagine you'll be pretty happy with the purchase.

I spent about the same on my Tenacious. Bought it as a beater knife for work and it did it's job well. For the money it's a decent EDC tool. I finally managed to chip the blade when trying to get a cork out of a wine bottle. The glass lip on the mouth of the bottle destroyed the edge on the blade. I know that's what corkscrews are for, but the GF left it at home.:applouse:

The way I look at it is it's going to be a lot of fun and you really can't do much for $29 these days that is a lot of fun so I'm happy. It's supposed to arrive today and even though I don't know why I bought it I'm still looking forward to it. lol

I've really enjoyed my Tenacious. I carried it every day for 2 years (before I moved to San Antonio where locking pocket knives are illegal). If they pass the preemption law, I'll start carrying it again.
Hope you get as much use or more from yours.

Thanks for making this post, I hadnt looked at the tenacious on amazon since it was still $30+, I plan of giving one to one of my friends for Xmas but I couldn't decide between the tenacious and a RAT, now that they're the same price I just grabbed a tenacious. Now to not play with it before Xmas.

Well, my Spyderco Tenacious arrived just a few minutes ago and it is a very nice knife. It is lighter than my Endura 4 so it may become my EDC, at least for a while. Here's the thing that shocked me, I look on the blade and it says CHINA. So Spyderco went from making knives in Colorado to Seiki City Japan to China? That a little unsettling for me but at the same time I didn't pay a lot for it, the standards are there (from the look of the knife) and the pivot is absolutely perfect AND the blade line up straight down dead center into the handle.

Please don't get me wrong, this is a VERY nice knife the G-10 handle is always a pleasure and something I've come to love on my Paramilitary 2 and I'm sure that the knife is made to standards set by Spyderco (to date, Spyderco has NEVER let me down) so maybe it's much a do about nothing but I was a little surprised to learn it was made in China. Then again, isn't everything made in China these days.

@cpurcell that really sucks about the locking pocketknife law. I'm very surprised to hear that such a law exists in Texas but my information about the majority of Texas is based on rumor and stereotypes. Though I did spend a few days, on a few occasions, near Tyler Texas in a town called Palestine so all I know about east Texas is that everything in the environment is out to sting, bite, attach or hurt you in some way. lol

@Cereal, glad I could be of service. It is a VERY, and I can't emphasize enough how very, very nice this knife truly is and it's a steal for $29.89 or whatever the exact amount is. I'm glad I was able to snag it at that price and I'm very happy with my purchase. It is SO much lighter in my pocket then my Endura 4 is and what's cool is is that the blade isn't all that much shorter than the Endura. Yeah, it's a slightly different design and shape but it's perfect for an EDC pocket knife. So no complaints here.

EDIT: Let me just add that a better quality knife at the $30 price simply does NOT exist, at least not to my knowledge. In many ways it's a smaller Para2 with liner lock instead of the Para locking mechanism but except for size and locking mechanism I see a lot of similarities. Very pleased with this purchase.

The tenacious is one of spyderco's "budget" lines, those 4 (or 5 if you count the cat) are the only knives made in china and the only to use 8Cr13MoV blade steel. Nothing wrong with them, its just the only way spyderco can afford to sell them at that price point.

If you check out the Spyderco website they will show you where the different models are made, USA/Japan...etc.

Yeah, kind of along the lines of what I figured. I have to say that the quality is really quite impressive. It feels like a Spyderco through and through and did I mention that it's light as a feather while have rather strong construction.

Good to know. Might look into that next time I'm buying a Spyderco which likely will be sooner rather then later.

The Tenacious really is a classic (for a Spyderco) and for the price you can not go wrong with it. Usually it acts as a gateway knife, but it is a great edc knife that is meant for hard use. I have an Endura too, and it is hard to say whether I would replace it with the Tenacious, but I would say that I would not. The Tenacious would go in my pocket 15-20 percent of the time and the Endura the rest. At least comparing those two I like to try and carry different knives all the time. It is enjoyable plus you have to share the love.

They manufacture blades in the US, China, Japan, and Taiwan. I own one Golden Spydie and have handled a few Japanese made Spydies. All were superb.

Hey! You stole my plan!

You're right, I don't know if I would replace my Endura but for the moment, since the Tenacious is new to me, I'm really enjoying it's lack of weight in my pocket while knowing it is a quality knife at the same time.

I agree, I've never seen a Spyderco that was anything but tip top when it came to quality products and quality control.

Hey! You stole my plan!

I think that's most of our plans. :D
