I have a trip planned to Gatlinburg Tn. this weekend and I will be visiting (non BF dealer reference removed) at least once while im done there. The problem I have is that I am not really looking for anything in particular......

So here's my dangerous plan;

I want you guys to give me thoughts, ideas, and just generally make me drool over some of the knives out there so that perhaps (no promises) I will find something that truly strikes my fancy.

Ill start with the ones that are in a consistent rotation in my pockets.

(sorry bad picture) but that gives you a general idea of what I already have, if you a listing I can do that.

Mostly this is just for fun and to give me some knives to consider... and I figured you guys like to share the wealth of knowledge that you have into the world of traditional pocket cutlery.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like you have no sleeveboard pattern in your case. This is an old pattern, and it can come with a variety of blades making it a cattleman, stockman, whittler, etc. I have a couple that are in the 3 1/2" range when closed, and they carry great. To me, I enjoy the old fashioned look of the case and actually carry them because they come in useful blade choices.

I am looking myself at the saddlehorn patterns as I have a friend of mine that bought one and uses it a lot for a work knife. Lots of handle, curved to fit the hand, and sturdy enough blades to use for just about any kind of knife work. The curve of the handle seems to make it ride nicely in the pocket. Might consider that.

Perfect time to look at the canoe pattern. Folks love 'em or hate 'em, but I like them. With the single spring construction, even the 3 1/2" canoes disappear in your pocket. This is the time to pick up a small canoe as well (known in CASE parlance as "the butterbean"), which I like about the best for small pocket knives.

The good thing is that you will get a lot of suggestions, and you will be going to a place where you can buy knives cheap enough to try out the patterns you are interested in owning. If you find one you don't like, you can give it away. If you find one you really like, you can try out the same pattern from different manufacturers.

Have fun!

Robert

I don't see an 300 series Buck stockman in there. Every knife nut needs a 301 or 303 Buck. They have to be used to be appreciated. Same thing for an Opinel. You need an Opinel to sand and modify.

Carl.

Find out what they have in their Knives Live stash! They might have a few Case Bose annuals or custom shop Bucks in there.

Please take some pics for those that can't go down :(.

Alright Carl, got one that I am thinking of pulling the trigger on myself: Case 2nd cut stag mini copperhead.

Beautiful little knife although it has stainless blades if that bothers you. They list them in stock and I would take a look if I were going down there. Hope you enjoy the trip, it sounds like fun to me. :)

I second DrPenguin on the Case Mini Copperlock. Thin and light with a lot of blade. They even make a Sparxx version to match your Case stockman.

I have been to (non BF dealer reference removed)two or three times and to my wife's distress I visit visit it each time!

Loving the suggestions so far, I dont have an unlimited budget... but I do have the largest budget I have had to date for pure knife enjoyment on one trip....

An opinel is on my list for sure, one of the smaller one probably as I work in an office and dont tend to carry bigger than 3 and a half in....

After the "every knife nut needs one" im almost afraid to ask but what do the buck 300's look like?

Also I'm a fan of the copperhead, and I have a copper lock so ill look around and see what I see that way.

Ok folks. I have no problem with this thread except ...... a certain mentioned dealer (who will in a moment or two be unmentioned) is not a BladeForums Dealer member. So let's keep it generic from here on out and leave the dealer name out of the conversation.

Thanks!

One of the great things about shopping there is the SELECTION. Don't hesitate to have the clerk open every box of a pattern to coon finger each one and pick out the best. They usually have 3-10 of any given knife, so plan to spend some time there.

Clutchcarter is right on about the museum-- that is where you'll want your camera!

I have been lucky enough to visit there several times while on hiking vacations. It can be overwhelming without some kind of plan. You may want to visit the website and make a list of things you want to handle. The list should be large enough to be used as a fan for someone to revive you with after you pass out from excitement ! Give yourself plenty of time there. Joe

one of the most beautiful ones they've got right now has got to be the Northfield swell center half whittler. Coupla different scale materials to choose from, too. I bet you'd be hard pressed to find a better made knife in the whole place.

OK, the upstairs is cool, but the stuff (non-knife) in the basement is pretty interesting also. The old knives are to the right when you go in. Very few real deals. Same with production stuff, but as noted you can pick and choose if you find something you like. Have fun.

Sorry about that

I feel like the 300 series would be an excellent change of pace. The 301 is a pretty nice, utilitarian pocketknife that just begs to be carried. Very interesting folders, also the more expensive GEC knives are very good quality as a whole, and the #15 Boy's knife of there's is causing quite a stir.

i was in there just before christmas and it was just a solid mess.
besides the opinel i think you should look into a douk douk and a mercator k55k. classic utilitarian knives that are as elegantly simple as the opinel though not as pretty. lol

anyway, check out sunfish, hawkbill and doctors knife patterns. would have suggested the canoe but someone beat me to it and the toothpick but you already have one. also a sodbuster, a fruit knife/melon taster, a buck 110 type lockback (they make smaller versions. the 110 is kind of bulky for me) and maybe some sort of friction folder.

dont know what all the 300 series bucks look like but the yellow one in this pic is a 301;

Last time I was there the wife dropped me & the boys off while she went to get groceries for the weekend. Coming back she got tied up in traffic & was running way behind. When she called me to let me know in case I was worried I told her we'd not even noticed the time. :)

Another vote for an Opinel. I also suggest checking out the Congress pattern.

Well I leave this afternoon, and will be leaving the old laptop behind (I work with a computer all day and vacation means time away from tech) I will keep a look out (ish) on my phone and then when I get back Ill post photos and let you know what I came up with.
