Pray tell, is GEC related to Queen...? S&M related to Ontario...? What's going on with all these brands...? Northfield related to who...? What a mess. Thank you for enlightening me.

Here is what I know about the brands you listed.

Ontario owns Queen

Great Eastern Cutlery is a different company, and their brands are:
Great Eastern
Northfield
Tidioute

I think GEC was started by old Queen people/person.

Maybe this'll help. (Unknown source)

To expand on Stu's statements, GEC was started by Queen's long time chief knife designer and maker. He's happy to get out from under the "bean-counters", but of course has to count his own beans!:D
He knows an enormous amount of lore about the 60s through 90s cutlery industry, and cares greatly about making well constructed, attractive knives in the old manner.
GEC is right across town from Queen, and they are all on speaking terms, but I suspect Queen misses the man's skills!

A book was released this year, called "Great Eastern Cutlery, An American Tradition, by David L. Anthony, which has a lot of info on.... guess who! It is close to 200 pages.

Not all of Taylor's Scharades are made in China. Bear and Son has made some, Camillus made some between 2004 and 2007, when they also went bankrupt, and Great Eastern made some (they look like their own "scout"). GEC also made a few autos for them which are very spendy now. Utica is making some for Taylor as well. These aforementioned are all American. Before Schrade went under, there was a great deal of cross manufacturing going on among Schrade, Camillus and Imperial, both parts of the knives and whole knives. They are not always easy to sort out.

Goodness gracious...!! Thank you soooo much...!!!

For some reason I can't help thinking Deliverance. So many brands made by the same usual suspects. Northfield and Northwoods, on and on, no wonder I couldn't make head or tails. Thank you, Ed.

I guess the short of it is that Smoky Mountain Knife Works and Blue Ridge Knives market the lion share of the knives.

Ed's is a very important chart.

By the way, Ontario owns Queen and other brands.
