just to add to my last ditch kit/bug out bag. Do you think this would be worth buying ? It's not really enough water for three days is it ? How big is said kit box? I have a few ways of purifying water so mostly buying it to see what the last ditch food is like.

I feel like you'd be better off with other food options. the food isn't great, mostly high caloric value lumps aiming for small size over weight, and not being able to cook. better to rotate through some freeze dry meals, or a bag of lentils. not much point in relying on a few little tins of water either when water storage at home is easy. that type of kit is really best for set and forget storage, and for the cost, you could stash a lot more resources at home.

Gadget geek , I just want to say I value your opinion, I have been buying freeze dri meals every time I'm in the surplus store , and I buy canned foods too , when I'm in the supermarket , to keep around the house. just exploring every option. I always appreciate your input , cheers mate :)

not trying shut down your idea, I just know that we spend a lot much more on stuff here, so it would be a pretty big gamble cost wise. If you were looking for a long-life food, and knew that you would not be able to cook, then they are a great option. I mean, they are life-boat rations for a reason. I think having a stocked cupboard and some food that you can take with you are the best options, since here in Aus, its bug-in if the world ends, and bug out after the cyclone takes the roof!

Not trying to shut down your thinking. I'm more thinking that given that we spend so much extra for stuff here than the US does, its an expensive gamble. I think you are on the right track with a diverse set of options. since you will most likely be able to cook (and if you are not, I'm sure you have some foods that can be eaten raw until you can) those are better, more useful options. Besides, then you know your stuff is fresh, rather than spending a lot, and having to throw it out after a few years.

Yeah you're cool mate .as I said I value your opinion. And if something canned is getting close to expiration date I'll just cook it at work for lunch. I do have six various cans of spam though , doubt I'll be cooking them for lunch at work lol.

In a hot environment you want at least 3 liters of water per day.

I'm skeptical about those long shelf life rations. Getting something that is edible is a trial and error process. I'd rather just rotate some food from the kitchen. Store what you eat and eat what you store as they say.
