I finally got a new EDC. I'm really digging the D4. I've collected several Spyderco knives over the years but the D4 has found a home in my pocket. I've been carrying a Delica 3 since 98. Hollow ground with ATS-55. Carried an Endura 1 before that but being a lefty as soon as the ambi clip was released I got a Delica "98 and I've been carrying it since. Took me a while but I finally got a Delica 4 the day after Christmas. It hasn't replaced the D3 but now they share time in the pocket. There's just something about that fine point on the D3 I really like and won't give up.
A couple of green G10 Delicas showed up today. :) I didn't realize they were FFG til they arrived. Should be awesome slicers.

I guess it had been a while since I bought a Spydie so it was time for a change. :D
It is addictive though. Since Christmas I've bought green FRN D4, a waved D4, a few black FRN D4s and the G10s that showed up today.

Gotta have backups.

Congrats on your new Spyder. I've got a D4 PE and a D3 CE. They're both great knives, but I find that I carry the D4 a lot more for edc. I really like the Bi-directional grip on the D4 and while I wasn't crazy about the tip when I first got it I must say that it's grown on me. I was always worried about breaking the tip of the D3, but I don't have those fears with the more robust tip of the D4 and it can still pierce well.

In fact, mine was a little thicker on the edge than is typical for Spydercos; over 20* per side. So I reprofiled it down to 15* per side and the tip is slightly more pointy than before.

I use the D3 now mostly when I go running because of it's lighter weight.

Anyway, they are both great edc knives.

If you have access to a belt sander or something, you can bring the tip to a point. I did it on mine. I also used a DMT XXC stone to flat-grind the blade, and I'm in the process of finishing it up.

The D4 has the best balance of everything in a compact, EDC-sized folder, at least in my opinion.

I never really worried about breaking the tip on the D3. I literally carried it every day for 11+ years and it never really crossed my mind.
I never thought about using it to pry or using it for anything but cutting though.

I'm going to leave the D4 as is. I figure I have both so there's no need to make the D4 any pointier. It seems to do the job just fine. :)

THG, I agree that it balances well and carries easily. I can tell the difference when I carry it over the D3 due to that little bit of extra length but it's been less than a month. It's like when you get a new wallet. Takes a little while to get used to it.

I'm a firm believer in having backups. I have several of the D3's still. Just never needed to dig one out of the clamshell. LOL! Never had an issue or broke the one I was carrying.

Still nice to have backups just in case. Especially when they changed the design and I couldn't get that specific knife anymore.
