This is an incredibly random post.

My wife just came home from her shift ( She works nights, I, days) to find a pile of paper and cardboard (and a few empty beer cans, still intact mind you) that I sliced up for no reason other than to dull my recently acquired Phillip Patton damascus scalpel in order to sharpen it again.

I suppose the topic of discussion is:
Does anyone else arbitrarily use their blades to the point of dullness for the sole purpose of being able to enjoy sharpening them?

Thanks for looking.

W, ha, it sounds to me like you're enjoying yourself, and getting off on that Damascus blade. That kind of thing can be difficult for non knife people to understand. For example, my step brother can't imagine why anyone would carry a pocket knife; while I can't fathom why most (?) other people don't always have a knife on them. We appreciate what we appreciate, it is what it is. And um, my wife has always known that I'm weird.......
About the dulling a blade just for the fun of resharpening it, yes, thirty years ago, but I haven't done it since I became proficient at sharpening. I sure enjoy sharpening though, every single time I do it.

Michael

P.S. Please post a picture of the scalpel, I'm curious to see what it looks like.

Sometimes I sharpen mine, then sharpen them again just to make them even sharper. I also enjoy cutting paper as well, my wife probably thinks I'm weird too, but she has never said so out loud.

I used to buy new knives, just so I didn't have to sharpen.
Now that I think about it, looking at the knives I've purchased in the past 2-3 months, maybe I still do??

Sharpening is great meditation. Though I don't purposely dull knives, I find myself sharpening often. Lately I've been polishing blades and after I get them shiney the edge almost always needs a touch up.

I won't purposefully dull them unless the goal is to destress the edge before sharpening. I will, from time to time, resharpen a sharpened blade at a higher grit to refine the edge or the apex bevel.

Ah... no. I have enough to sharpen, I have no need to purposely dull a knife just to have something to sharpen, I always have blades in need of attention. :)
Same here. Something always needs sharpening, usually in the kitchen or my around the house and yard fixed blade

A little weirdness separates us from the PC crowd and makes us individuals. Knife enthusiast? You don't think that is a little weird in itself? Don't care.

I don't purposely dull a knife just to re-sharpen it.

My wife certainly doesn't agree with my tool "addiction". But she has her quirks too.

My wife has stopped saying much about my constant tinkering and sharpening. Now it's usually her walking up to me with something in her hand she wants me to take, which is almost always shreds of receipt paper. The cat has managed to find the ones she misses ;)

I don't usually dull my knives just to sharpen them But I I do find some strange pleasure in cutting paper and cardboard on occasion. And my wife thinks I'm weird but for different reasons.

No, I do not do this. After I put in the time and effort to get a knife sharp, I prefer that it stays that way as long as possible during normal use.

I believe your wife may be onto something.

Got to agree with JC. I do enjoy putting my own edge on my knives but once I do, I typically have more respect for the edge.

I only bust out the KME every other weekend or so. Just touch ups with the sharpmaker rods and strops after the KME unless I get a chip or such
