So I've pretty much decided on a Benchmite II...

But I notice that only the black 1 is engrave-able (sp?), but I don't know of anywhere I could get it engraved.

So, the black 1 has that advantage, because I wouldn't mind having my name on the back of the knife, but I can't readily get it engraved. Also... does the coating on the black have any sort of advantages or disadvantages (other than the silver 1 is nicer and would match my Kershaw Leek) in terms of holding an edge or resharpening?

P.S.: I'm wanting this knife cause I want a nice looking secondary knife, so if anyone knows of a better knife in the same price range I'll gladly consider it (Hey, if you can find me a good deal on a Spyderco Cricket... :D)!

(If I didn't make myself clear enough I'm pretty much asking if the Benchmite II is the most bang for the buck, and whether the coating on the black version affects the longevity of the blade)

First, both the black and un-coated version are engravable, so neither has an advantage there. The coating should help with corrosion resistance, but won't affect sharpening or edge holding. It is really a great little knife. Others you might want to consider are the Byrd Finch and Byrd Sparrow.

Lol, apparently I read "Blank Handle Scale can be Personalized" as "Black Handle Scale can be Personalized" and the picture of a black 1 engraved didn't help me either.

Well, in experience with a gerber ridge that was coated with some black stuff, it just ends up coming off, so I think if I get a Benchmite I'll get the silver 1, but I'll also check out the ones you (Padawan) said.

Also, anyone have any idea where I could even get the knife engraved?

In looking more I'm seeing Spyderco Crickets and Spins at around $50/$60, are those good knives for the price? Anyone handled any of the knives mentioned?

Yes, both are good knives, and each is different (particularly with regard to blade shape). Out of all the knives mentioned here, there is honestly no bad choice. It really comes down to how much you want to spend, what blade shape, lock type, and opening, and carry method you prefer, and overall appearance.

Well... if I could get my hands on the blue Benchmite I I'd pick it in a instant (its got better blade steel than the II, and a cool design on the back), but I dunno... I like the Benchmite II for looks more than the Spyders in many ways... so, I guess I'll get myself a Benchmite II, though... I'm not fully decided on color!

Next I need a balisong :D

Now: where to buy on the cheap?

Found em cheap on New Graham, anyone know if it's a reliable site to purchase from?

They don't have silver in right now, only black, so I dunno if I'll wait for silver or what, but first I want to try and win an eBay auction on a Benchmite I.

When do I get to choose what it engraves? I'm guessing some time during checkout, but it makes no mention of the service.

In case you're still interested in other options, take a look at the Kershaw Baby Boa. I love the design and recurve blade. I have both limited edition versions (all grey and all black), but the standard is very nice also.

For folders of this size, I prefer assisted. I've handled the cricket and tho you do get used to it as you open it more, it's still a bit tough to open sometimes. I never handled the Spin, but seeing as it's smaller, I'd assume the same. Plus, the polished SS frame/handles don't help with grip on something this size.

Cool! I in fact just decided on the silver version as well.

Habit-Shoot knifeworks an email concerning your questions about engraving @ help@knifeworks.com Roger at knifeworks is a great guy and generally gets back to you pretty quick on questions. Here's a quote from the site

Well, I sent em an email and the response was:

No we charge for the knives to be engraved. Normally 7.00 to 10.00

Thanks
Dana

EDIT: Anyone have a picture of an actually engraved knife from knifeworks?

check out the spydie lava. I was getting ready to buy a benchmite until I handled the lava. I am very happy that I picked it instead

I love my benchmite II. Very sharp, nice design and i retired my very much used m16 for now and carry this. You dont even notice it in your pocket. I have the silver version. Good luck!

I'd imagine it will look just like the engraved Kershaw shown on the KnifeWorks web site in the link provide by Mick R.

Maybe... but that kind of looks like someone just used paint to throw the word "Princess" on a picture of the knife.

Welp... I suppose K. W. S. wouldn't look too bad on the back of the knife.
