So last night I realize my Kershaw needs sharpening...

I pull a TV tray over in front of the couch, pull out the old (and I mean OLD) Hiram A. Smith sharpening kit, and go to work. Before I knew it, I had a Griptilian and American Lawman next to the Kershaw and was touching those up as well.

I think it hit me last night that one of the great things about knives is that sharpening them can almost be meditative. For me, there were no bills to worry about, no thoughts of the inventory we had at work today, no family issues, nothing....just the blade and the stone. Nothing else mattered, just putting a good edge on the blade. I couldn't even tell you what was on TV, even though it was on right in front of me.

Amen

The meditative aspect of sharpening has been mentioned.

One thing that may surprise about it, and similar activities.

Years ago I heard from a reliable source that those who pray the Rosary receive physical benefits, aside from the spiritual ones. What physical benefit? It lowers blood pressure.

Same thing probably happens when sharpening knives on a stone. JMHO.

My wife does scrapbooking. She claims to get the same sense of inner peace. I do the same playing the saxophone, but it's a bit noisier. :D

Agreed. I believe that your mind can take over the task of hand sharpening completely if you let it.

It's not subject to the inner dialogue of b***sh*t like thoughts of one's job, what kind of garbage they're pedaling on TV.

It's definitely in the realm of meditative pursuits and healthy too IMO. :)

I'm sharpening right now on a DMT Aligner. There's really nothing like the feel of steel on stone.
