So many good choices

I'm slowly delving into the world of slipjoints and traditionals after only carrying the more 'tactical' knives. I really want to get another GEC pocketknife, (i have the micarta bullnose) I just feel overwhelmed by the options that are available,( i own a couple case and some old schrades/old timers) I guess I will end up getting them all one by one. I know personal taste plays a big part in what to buy, but what should be my next GEC purchase?

73 Scout or a 72 Lockback... Another one I really like is the Moose. They are a nice pattern, AND they have a really cool Bullwinkle Moose on one of the blades

There are so many different variations, it will make your head spin after awhile. It really depends on if you want 1 or 2 blades, what style of blades, what size, if you want bone, wood or synthetic scales, and the big one, how much you want to spend

As you say, lots of options between the various models, blade choices, and scale materials. But I'll suggest the 55 Houndstooth with a wharncliffe blade. Good luck with the new addiction!

I'm with you brother.. I have an ongoing list of designs I like but I'm waiting to get the blade versions and handles I want, even if it takes me a long time. So whichever pops up first with the specs I want, I grab. Welcome to the new addiction.

It really boils down to your personal tastes, budget, and what you plan to use the knife for.

Check some of the GEC dealers web sites and start getting a feel for what the patterns look like and about how much they cost.

The model #15 in all of its variations is very popular, and for good reason. It's a great size, and doesn't break the bank too bad.

The model #48 is also popular, a slim serpentine trapper / jack pattern. I have two of these in different styles and love them.

They have some interesting patterns coming out soon so you might want to wait. The #09 Esquire and #78 American Jack look tasty.

I would say the #15 boys knife. Seems you cant go wrong with one of those and everyone who tries one ends up liking it. Also you have your pick of blades - clip, spear, or sheepsfoot.

What size (closed length) do you prefer? One or two? Three blades?

Personally i prefer one or two blades. I like my pocketknives to be slim and not feel heavy or bulge too much in the pocket.

This is a 2-blade #79. Very slim and 3.75" closed.

A #6 Pemberton on top, 2.75" closed with a Clip main and Pen secondary blade. A small but delightful little companion. The bottom one is a #55 with a single Spear blade (3.5").

A Barlow with spey blade (3.5")

Start here :D

After you look at all of that come back and give us the numbers of a few that stand out. But ill just go aheah and second the 55, great knife. Good luck and welcome to the addiction.

Thanks for all the feedback fellas, and thanks for that link rockgolfer. I think my next knife will be this one

Excellent choice---it's a great work knife

The EO has been a HUGE plus for me the last few months after catching my left thumb in a ratchet strap :o. It's getting close to being past the trouble spot and I hope the nail heals completely . I've carried my all time favorite Clip Barlow every day since the injury but have had to use the EO almost exclusively for obvious reasons. It's hard to open a knife with your other hand when it's so ingrained to do it the normal way :(.

I've been looking for more "pinchable" blades and recently received the Bull Nose Canvas Micarta for a trial run.

The longest (to my knowledge) thread of all Bladeforums:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...tional-Knife-quot-are-ya-totin-today/page1766

will give you hours of entertainment, plenty of drooling, and maybe help you get a clearer idea of what your next slipjoint will be.
As you might already know, there's much more variety in the slipjoint world compared to modern folders, so I think you should really try to narrow your specs, and decide at least the number of blades (and eventually the blade shapes you like most), and the closed length...otherwise you will be bombed with suggestions that go towards any direction like arrows from a drunk blind archer :D
I also suggest that (for your next knife, or for the one after it) you also widen your choice to other companies; GEC makes great knives, but they're not the only ones :)

Why not look forward to some of the new GEC's coming soon? The 09 Esquire, The 78 American Jack, or the 47 Viper. All to be released in the coming weeks.

What are you looking for in this next knife? A 1 knife EDC or will you carry it with another knife, either the bullnose or a MOHO? Without knowing your answer, I'd suggest a #33 Conductor or #68 White Owl. Both are single spring (ie slim in pocket) knives but have 2 blades. The 2 1/2" main blade has been enough for most EDC tasks and you still have a secondary blade for opening packages, etc. The can work as a 1 knife EDC but I like having a larger blade too should a need arise. Both are available in 1095 or 440C as well (although they may be hard to find).

Here's a couple comparison pics I took a while back with a #33, #53, #68, and #89. The #89 is also available in 1095 and 440c while the #53 Cuban Pen is only 1095 so far.
