Hey guys (yeah I know it's been a long while since I have posted) I'm just looking for a decent flashlight, nothing spectacular, but I'm rather curious in the LED flashlights. The only ones I have found are the S&W one (which takes the funky little batteries) and one at "Sharper Image" (The kind of junk you see in the little catalogs on the airlines) which takes about 3 "AAA" batteries which doesn't seem half bad, yet 20 dollars for something that I don't think can take much abuse is a bit much.

I'm actually in a bit of a time crunch because I need it in about two weeks (leaving for LV to hook up with some friends to go to AZ for some big SCA event (I'm not into the fighting part, but they want me and my fire preformance gear there))

And I'm sure that there are some decent threads out there on them, and even if you just point me in the right direction I'll be happy as a clam.

Also I have noticed the price in the Shurfire lights, are they relativly worth the money (Yes stupid question I know, but I gotta save money, because it is also the racing season too (and I'm trying to get ahold of a straight jacket))

You'll get a better response in the Gadgets and Gear forum in the Knife Community section. The ARC light uses AAA batteries and is said to be pretty good. Also, you might check the Inova X5 which is also supposed to be a very good led light with 5 diodes in the end and built like a tank. Costs about $50 or less. SureFires are much brighter and will throw a beam much farther, but are expensive to feed because they usually use CR123 batteries and last only an hour on a set.

I really like Princeton Tec lights. A Lot, I think I bought three in the last week:). You might want to look at the PT Attitude led. It uses 4 AAA batteries, and puts out good working light. They say it has 150 hours of burn time on a set of batteries. I have not changed mine yet, but the light has been getting dimmer. I have used it for probably 20-25 hours. Dropped it a few times, seems pretty tuff and is waterproof too. I bought one for $20 I think at REI. I know they can be bought cheaper online. They got a whole bunch of other LEDs also. http://www.princetontec.com/entry.html

The Arc light is a good deal one of my co-workers has one and I am ordering ong one this week. Also check www.ccrane.com they carry several led flashlights.

I like the princeton tec and that Inova X5 also, but I have a couple very nice Petzl headlamps - one has 3 leds and only weighs 2.5oz and only costed $30, the other is a moutaineering lamp that has one halogen and i believe four leds, I think I paid a pretty penny for that one though?:D

when you talk about racing are you talking about SCCA? like autocross or prorally, etc? SCCA Prorally was just here in Michigan for the Sno-Drift last weekend - starting off the season.

I have an Attitude and it is a great light. It throws a decent beam and it is supposed to be waterproof up to 2000 feet. The Inova is another awesome piece which seems tough as hell. It does run on more expensive batteries, but it still is supposed to get about 20 hours of light. As a back up I would recommend the Arc AAA over the CMG Infinity. My Infinity shot craps after 1 week of LIGHT (no pun intended) use. The last light that I feel deserves mention is the Streamlight Stylus. Mine is very light to carry and puts out a nice clean red beam. Very handy!
Good luck,
Matt

I also like the Princeton Tec Attitude - add on the lamp module from a the Princeton Tec Rage, and you have a dual purpose light (led flood or bright incandescent spot) by simply swapping out the lamp module. Uses common AAA batteries. Total cost would be about $21 from brightguy.com (not including shipping, which is pretty reasonable from brightguy)

No, the SCA isn't the same as the SCCA. :)

The SCA is a non-profit Medieval recreation group, that has events throughout the United States (and other countries). The event he's talking about in Arizona is Estrella War, the second largest annual event in the organization.

I believe they routinely have >500 fighters per side for the melees (group battles) , and >5000 in attendance each year.

For some pictures from a recent Estrella War see:

For more information on the Society itself see:

It's a heck of a lot of fun. I haven't had a chance to play in a few years...

Best,
Cedric

Cedric - thanks for explaining that. At the end of his post Timmy said something about saving money for racing season, or something like that. Oh well, just hoping to find a fellow motorsports nut on the forum. :D
