I had a great day ! Fresh ,fresh air . Out in the wqoods . Shooting my bow, lopping limbs with my B:A:S: . A cup of coffee and geese honking overhead on a fly by were the icing on the cake ! I didn,t even mind losing three arrows and breaking a brand new tomahawk ! The hawk is one I bought off of E-bay and was a double bitted model . I had thrown it about twenty times and I heard an odd sound .Kinda like two pieces of metal springing apart and slapping together . I took a quick look at the hawk and didn,t notice anything amiss except for a very faint nda halfheartedly stamped into the side of the blade . I thought this may have been India in another lifetime so I started to question the quality of the hawk even though it looked o,kay . I was practicing a turn and a half throw and it landed perfectly to partially show me the bottom of the blade . The blade was split from eye half way to blade on both sides . I,m glad I saw it before it broke completely . The pieces might have flown anywhere . I hope to get my money back minus the shipping and I will make certain not to buy another India Hawk . What do you guys think ?

I think there are at least a couple of very good throwing hawk manufacturers in the US whose prices are reasonable and product is excellent. It was throwing hawks that led me to HI; never made it back to the Hawk forums.

Anyway, why buy on Ebay when you can buy direct with a known product?

I agree to go with what you know and have got one on order through a throwing site called the great throwzini . A great bunch of guys !

On a seperate note,I don,t think ragweed forge ships to Canada . The reason I wanted this hawk is it was the first double bitted one I had seen. I am lucky that it was an on-line store I bought it from through E_BAY .
I have two hawks made from a local forge(I like them but they are a bit soft) and I have a hawk-like ax . I will have a fourth once the one from the states shows up . If it turns out to be half decent I will stick with them as their prices are reasonable . I am always open to other leads on reasonably priced hawks so If you guys have leads let me know .

Haven't fiddled with my hawks lately, but did make myself a dandy throwing knife. Made it from a piece of 3/16" thick spring steel that really impressed me with the with the spark pattern I got while grinding it, excellent carbon content. Throws perfectly, one full turn at 15 feet. After a couple dozen throws sticking it in the stump, I looked it over very closely, no bending (not even the very tip) no cracking, and no significant dulling (the first two inches of blade forming the point, primary edge and false edge, are honed sharp for a good stick). It's a keeper, so I'll rivet some leather scales onto the handle and stow it with my hawks.

Attached a pic with my 12" Siru next to the thrower for size comparison.

High carbon content ? The handle is the color of coal ! L:O:L It looks like a tough knife . I throw out to 18 feet when I am right on though I usually stick to 10-12 feet depending on the hawk .I am looking for another double bitted hawk . I will make sure its from a good source . My buddy is sending me another with a hammer poll on the back . I want that one for light duty camp work . That would give me three to throw and the double blade just for fun as I don,t feel comfortable with it as a carry . Its starting to get a little colder which stiffens my fingers for archery . Another couple of weeks and I,ll hit my indoor range . Its literally 5 minutes from my house . I only shoot once a week there . Its a great bunch of guys though they only shoot compound bows .

I certainly hope you get you money back.

I have a frontier hawk from Allan Foundry (available among many other fine choices from Ragnar). Last weekend at hunting camp I showed the two teenagers (my son and a friend's son) the tradition of throwing to decide who must do the dishes. Throwing at the block, not at one another ;). That got some great competitions going and now we've got two new throwers in our midst.
