I JUST finished making my first sheath for my new Fiddleback Hunter and I was inserting the knife into it to wet mold when the Hunter sliced through the "edge" of the welt and through the sheath it's self! Damn, all that work down the drain but this knife is REALLY SHARP!!! Any suggestions gents for a sheath???

Pictures or you don't have a hunter and this never happened and you're full of it. kidding man, but pic's are real good.

Did you glue the welts in, or just set them in?

Just glued the welt. Probably just as well as Andy's knives deserve more than my meager talents. Kind of like putting Cragar SSTs on a Ferrari...

How thick is the leather you're using. The Hunter is a pretty stout knife, I used 10-12oz on mine. What type of sheath are you making - foldover, randall, pancake etc. I made a foldover lined with deerskin for mine and Mistwalkers that came out nice.

I'd love to learn to make a leather sheath for a few of mine. Can anyone suggest how to learn and where to get supplies/tools? Thanks guys...

Tutorials are all over the web. Do some searching and you'll easily find some. I get my supplies from Tandy but I'm sure there are other suppliers out there.

I found that leather was not as easy or cheap to work. The tools cost more and you need more of them to make it look right.

Dull the knife up first. The method I would suggest is to place the blade edge down on a curb and bash the spine with a hammer until you can see a nice flat surface all the way down the edge. When you're done making the sheath, ship it back to Andy and say it's a warranty issue and make him fix the knife for you for free.

ok. Don't really do that.

"place the blade edge down on a curb and bash the spine with a hammer until you can see a nice flat surface all the way down the edge. I was using shoulder leather that I purchased from Tandy at $4.00 sq/ft. for the whole shoulder. Craig, do you have any pictures of the sheath you made? I'll try to get some pictures up asap.

when I'm making a sheath, I use blue masking tape (painter's tape) to cover the edge, then wrap the entire knife in Glad Press n' seal freezer wrap to protect the knife from the wet leather. This way, when the molded leather dries and shrinks that little bit, i have some built in slack so the retention is not too tight.
It also limits my ability to slice through the wet leather, which is significantly easier to do than when it's dry. :)

good luck on the second try!
