Hey guys,

I've seen what I believe are Rose Hips growing around here and I have heard that they are edible. My question is, does that mean edible as in "Oh look, riple Huckleberries" or "I guess I can eat these cattail roots to keep from dying" edible?

What part is edible? What do they taste like? Is any preparation necessary?

Thanks!

Rose hips swell out real nice from her waist and her cheeks are the colour of apples.....what you wantin to know about my rose for anyways!!!!!

Roses , the fruit forming below the flower is called the hip .It is completely edible. An excellent source of vitamin C. A favorite preserve in northern Europe .Larger varieties are especially useful . You'll notice they sometimes last into late winter when it becomes an important food source for birds.

yes rose hips are eatable! nibble away at the outer fruit and spit the seeds, or mash up and brew a tea with them. Extremely high in Vit c

You can do a number of things with Rose hips,, everything from Tea to Jam, or eat them right off the bush...Good Stuff and a Valueable food source,, Survival or Not !

Excellent in Vit C etc etc...
I know if a rose hedge that's about 200 feet long, the probably has 200-300 lbs of hips on them right now..

*kgd*

If you want to check it out it's right along Howard ,,right in front of Dr. Hawkswood's office...

 You're not going to find them in the deep woods, you'll find them in cultivated rose gardens or in open areas where wild roses grow. I've got a stretch of wild ones. As Eric said, you can eat them raw off the bush, boil them, drink the tea and eat the pulp, spit out the seeds or not, candy them, make jam or jelly, etc. If you're starving and find some, you'll live a while longer.

As the others have said they are good to eat some taste better than others. Every year when I see them while out on my morning walks with kelly girl I will pick a small hand full of them and munch on them and then spit the seeds out too.
