So the other day we were talking about firesteels, knives and sheath design....

So I made one for one of my newbies using one of the great ideas that came from the discussion. It works GREAT!

Bowman1911 came up with this idea. When PeterPWHS verified it was a good idea, I knew it was legit and figured I'd try it out.

Only two rules on this thread:

1. No one make fun of my krylon camo or kydex work.... m-kay... ;) Dave Brown I am not... I only do this as an excuse to drink beer.

2. I know it's a Rat, and this is the "Busse" forum. Get over it... it's my new toy from Trever. Son of a Buck ships faster than Amy-0 BTW...

Pic is a bit fuzzy, see 'beer' above... stupid camera. :p

Used snaps so that it would be easily removable, but they were not secure enough. Replaced top one with Chicago-Screw (which, oddly enough is also my name for the current administration) as a temporary fix. Ordered some "pull the dot" snaps to replace them with, it will require a least two more hours of sold labor and dreadful beer consumption. Still, the leather belt loop works far better for me that tec-lok's or a kydex loop since it has the ability to flex and move with you. I find kydex and other plastic loops too rigid and restrictive. It's much more comfortable this way IMO.

This last pic is dedicated to my man RussMo. ;) Alaska beer rocks.

As you can see the hack saw blade/fire steel striker folds neatly down in an unobtrusive manner.

Hope all you guys are having a great weekend...

Nice work man, have you tried it?
If it is a bit cumbersome to through sparks from the middle of the sheath
you could move the striker to the very bottom hole.

Thanks, It's crazy easy. I use the flat top of the saw blade. The teethy side eats up the rod too fast.

The only inconvenience is that she sheath has to be removed from your belt. Still, a very minor inconvenience. When the new snaps come in it will be simpler to remove from my belt without having to remove my entire belt. Might not seem like much, but I roll kinda like batman. Lots of (other) gear on the belt. PITA. ;)

Edit to add: Hard to tell from the pics, but the hacksaw blade is about 3" long.

That's awesome KD, & I personally like that tigerstripe pattern! Glad you like the idea.;) BTW, That bottle opener is gorgeous!!!

Nice to see some pic's up of this idea ... and I like the set up you have there Kevin

For blades like the NMSFNO and NMFBM which have the nuclear treatment and all edges are rounded off this makes a whole lot of sense ...

Ditto for those who like their CG painted finishes on any other blade ... as the paint sometimes prevents a good strike or is worn away from using the ferro rod if the angle is sharp enough ...

I plan on doing this on my kydex NMSFNO sheath and will probably go for the bottom hole placement ... quick release wise I have'nt yet decided on the system I will use ...

I might go similar to Ken but use a nylon webbing belt attachment and replace the metal O ring with a Karabiner from my climbing gear if I want a dangler system ... or make a bepoke leather sheath for this ... or I might try the Tek Lock reverse mounted so the clips to release it are near the top of the sheath so I don't have to undo the belt ... we'll see ;)

Cool set up. I've used a light my fire steel scraper on my kydex sheaths before in that fashion. Used a chicago screw with a rubber washer for some kind of retention to the sheath to keep it from sliding away from the sheath when not needed. I like your leather belt loop too, awesome...!
