So Then She Says...

Hello Friends,

Some of you might recall a thread I posted earlier this year titled So She Says... in which my bride, after many years, suddenly took an interest in knives. At least so much as to decide on a knife she wanted for herself.

Well, the other day, while we're both at work, she sent me a text message to inform me that one of my favorite Case retailers has an upcoming sale this Saturday. This was certainly out of the ordinary. By and large she might mention that if there's a knife I'm thinking about, we can afford X amount of dollars at a given time. Basically, permission to buy something so long as it is at or under that amount. But to actually inform me of a knife sale? That's never happened.

I asked her how she knew that and she just sent me a little smiley face. I figured we must of gotten an email notification so I checked. Nope.

What is she up to I wondered...

Now, let me say, I've been having a rough go lately. I don't want to get into the details because this isn't about all that but it is the basis for the story.

So then she says (or text), "Did you know the Case Medium Congress is out for a limited time and hasn't been made in many years?"

"Yes," I respond.

"That's pretty cool," she said.

"It is."

And that was that. I figured she was hinting around that I could buy a knife or two during the upcoming sale and that she might like the Congress for her own. I asked her a few questions that night but she mostly shrugged them off in a way that played into my theory.

But then today, I come home from work and there's a little box tucked up under the porch chair. And the label is from that retailer.

Well, it turns out she bought me the below little gem to cheer me up. It's stunningly gorgeous and actually feels really great in hand. I've pondered many times buying one but feared it was a little too small. It can be so hard to judge things on the internet and try to compare them to what you might already have. I kept passing on it but my goodness am I glad she didn't.

Up to now, I think she's bought me one knife and then decided I was "too picky". But wow, she nailed this one! It's a touch bigger than the Medium Stockman, which I'm glad about, but still in my "pocket-friendly" druthers.

Yep, a couple of the blades rub. I don't care. Yes, the main Wharncliffe is a touch difficult to get your nail into. I don't care. Beautiful, highly functional knife! Why is this not a regular pattern???!!!

What a boost when I really needed one. I'm very blessed. It's not the material thing so much as the sentiment.

And, she said I can still get something during the upcoming sale! Totally a material thing! :D

Anyway, some comparison pics for those who might be wondering:

- Medium Stockman
- Medium Congress
- Trapper
- Canoe
- Mini Copperlock

One day at a time my friends. No matter what comes at you, just keep putting one foot in front of the other and sometimes, out of nowhere, love and kindness will comfort you and bring you joy.

Nice write up. Sounds like you have picked a winner for a life partner.

It’s nice to have a supporting spouse through tough times. At the end of it all... these relationships are what matter most.

For better or worse... richer or poorer.

Nice knives too!!!

My better half still rolls her eyes at my obsession with these tools, but she understands the therapeutic relaxation this hobby offers me. I’m very happy with that.

Thanks again for sharing!

That is so cool, most of the time life is pretty good ;)

My wife actually expressed a little interest in a knife that I got yesterday. I opened the box while she was upstairs and she asked later if it was ANOTHER knife and I said yes, expecting the whole "do you really need another knife" lecture, but she wanted to see it and said it was kind of neat. It was a 3.5" Hinderer skinny slicer, so it really is pretty neat, but that is about as good as it gets from a Kindergarten teacher.

So what are you gonna pic in addition ??

Well, I take back what I said in my last post! She said she'd already allotted me $75 so I could go ahead and get something. Well, even though the sale was only on one specific knife, they are running some specials on others. So I just ordered a single Wharncliffe Mini Trapper in yellow Derlin and a Sunflower yellow synthetic Doctor's knife. Came in at $78. I'll probably get the squinty-eye, scrunched lips look but I'm betting I'll be okay.

:p:D

Cool beans.
A pair of Cases, unique ones at that, sounds like a winner
Hope they're all good ones my friend :)

Very nice and very thoughtful of her. Cool colors too. I'll have to look into another Case Congress if they're making them again. I only have one and it's a yellow handle CV from the mid 1990's.

Got my two "On Special" knives today and really like them!

To be specific I ordered:

1) Case 4285SP SS Doctor's knife (w/spatula) in sunflower synthetic - I've reeeeaaaalllly wanted to try one of these but always grab something I'm a little more confident in. But, at the price I got, it was worth the leap.

2) Case 3107W SS Yellow synthetic Mini Trapper Wharncliffe (single blade) - I'm excited tot try this one. Love the Mini Trapper pattern and enjoy the sleekness of a single blade.

The Doctor's Knife is very cool. You can really see how a travelling doctor back in the day would've liked such a knife. For modern uses, I personally would see this as a work desk drawer or maybe picnic kind of knife. Slicing berries, spreading peanut butter on a bagel or cheese on a cracker, that kind of thing. I wouldn't want to slice a lot of harder salami and such as the corner of the spatula can dig into the pinky finger in a tight grip. Nothing terrible and if you adjust your grip slightly you can get around it but just something I noticed. It's very slim and although I only briefly tested it, it pockets quite nicely. I personally would not care for this knife as much without the spatula. That makes it for me. The Sunflower Yellow color is excellent and I wish Case offered it more!

The Mini Trapper makes an outstanding first impression! Already being a huge fan of the pattern, this single blade version is no let down to be sure. My particular example has a great spring and feels sleek and nimble. Love the yellow Derlin (although that Sunflower would be pretty sweet too). For me, this knife is already a Mini Copperlock challenger and that is a knife I very much love. Looking forward to pocketing this guy over the coming weeks and seeing how we get along.

For less than $80 for the pair, I couldn't be happier! :)

Just a quick note for future clarity...The little dots on the blade of the Trapper in the second pic aren't defects or anything. There was just the first hint of a sprinkle and those are little droplets. Didn't notice until the picture was posted. :)

Nice new pair there.
The mini trapper is a super pattern. I have two with caplifters. I should pick one up in wharncliffe.
