A few days ago was my mother's birthday. She is extremely anti-knife--the only thing she'll carry is a 10 year old SAK which is cracked, dull, and missing the tweezers. Well, I thought it might be nice to present her with my Spyderco Native. Obviously, she was apprehensive at first, but I've already seen her use it several times and she has reluctantly admitted that it comes in handy...especially since it has a blade that can actually cut. If she can be convinced, anyone can.

That was a nice, thoughtful gift for your mother. For Christmas, you might want to give her a Spyderco Sharpmaker, so that she'll be able to keep that Native razor sharp.

Yup, sometimes it is a little wierd the way people react to knives. My mom has been a operating room nurse for something like 20 years and has probably handled more sharp objects and seen more gory cutting than anybody else I know but still freaks out at my knife collection.

I'm confused by my wife's mind-set sometimes, myself. She recently went with her sister to visit their sick father, and the trip required an hour on the Interstate. Both women own guns, both disarmed themselves. My wife likes the Kershaw Boa, I gave it to her, she won't carry it daily. (BTW, her SAK has lost the toothpick, is duller than sex with Hillary, and has the grips broken off!) Because of her side business, we get lots of UPS packages. Yet, as my Microtech Tanto or my new LCC sit out in the open on the end table, she walks to the kitchen for a steak knife. The other night, as the mail came, I had to PUT a Microtech inher hand to slit open the bills. My friends relate similar stories.--OKG

I had similar experiences with my ex-wife and my mother...both changed after I presented them with several Victorinox paring knives and a SAK. Both of them now carry SAK's in their purses and their vehicles. I did the same thing with my girlfriend...she now carries a SAK everywhere and she laid claim to one of my Spyderco Delicas, which she carries anytime we head for camping or the woods to hike or scout. I caught her eyeing my Native, too. If she keeps it up I'm gonna miss her.

My mom's the other side of the coin. She gets pissed if I go to the Eugene knife show and don't get her something.
