I pulled a 5160 110 I had sitting in the box for awhile... and I noticed this........my first thought was polishing compound...but it's not. so what do y'all think?152910927393335290752425711701.jpg 15291093055474117167414753930305.jpg

I think it has something to do with the Heat treat process. The edge and tip may be harder than the spine causing a slight color difference. Carbon steel will form patina over time. Metal polish should even the shade out and shine it back up, if that's how you want it. Or let it do its thing as long as it's not rust patina is Cool :D Keep a coat of mineral oil on it when not in use.

in hindsight realized I didn't explain well in my post.....

it's not a patina. that I know for sure. bought it sat in box coated in factory oil coat in styrofoam sleeve. decided to pull it out and saw it had that dark coloring where I figured it missed the polishing wheel in production? i see it as no real issue.....just wondering if it was maybe the heat treatment coloring....

yeah I'll polish it out myself....most likely by using it to cut stuff.:) thanks for your insight Sir. always appreciated.

My s90v gets that after I use and wash it. Then don't dry it off, just allow it to sit. I'll check my 110 w/ D2 steel. I haven't used
that one in a long time. DM

The 110 w/ D2 blade did not have this. Perhaps I gave it an oil coating before putting it away. It's been a while since I've used that one. DM

yes Sir. mine was from the factory in original packaging never opened or used until today. I believe it's just heat treat coloring that missed the polishing.

I believe that would come off with a dab of Flitz and a little rubbing with a soft cloth. Or some other low abrasive metal
polishing. A fine clay may work or even cigarette ashes. DM
