What do you do when you have blown your acquisition budget for new knives. I've been on a bit if a binge lately and I just went over the top with my first custom i bought at ECCKS.

So how do others fill the time, sharpening, polishing? what do you do?

Isn't that what BFC is for?

S_S is right, that's just what BFC is for, to discuss and learn more about knives so that we can make more informed purchases when the budget allows. I went to ECCKS knowing I wasn't buying anything, I still had a good time, seeing friends, looking at and handling some new knives. If I had gone with money my focus would have been totally different. I'm past the point where I just want to accumulate knives. I want to stay focused on a certain style of knife and to buy the best I can afford.

Also to get past times of no money I collect pics off the Web and save them to my HD. I also look for new makers websites and sometimes make adjustments to my Wish List, or sometimes just to confirm the choices I've made. ;)

Once your knife budget is exhausted and you've got a couple cool new blades as a result, I find that the thing to do is focus on the tool budget. Use the tool budget to buy a grinder and some steel bar stock. Then go to the garage and get busy. It'll take up a lot of your spare time and give you a real appreciation for what it takes to make a quality knife (I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who's in the process of making his first few blades, not someone who has actually made a quality knife).

This might not work for everyone, but so far it's working for me...

The forums will also likely become a good way to feed your addiction, but will likely not be good for your wallet.

You got new knives? Great! Use them, enjoy them! Slow down on the acquisitions while you get a better feel for what the latest knives can do. Yes, Bladeforums is a good place to talk about that, too. Do a search on your newest knives and see what the rest of us have to say about them, and what you might want to think about next. Thinking can take a little time.

I went to the show Saturday, too, determined to hold onto my money this time. Ha! Got a necklace, a neck knife, and a wallet -- to put my depleted funds in ... but I fixed a couple of salads with the neck knife already!

Hey that's EXACTLY what I do! Aside from that...well, that's why credit cards were invented ;)

It sure is tough.
I have gone over budget and now am forced to do something called "saving". Just bought a Sharpmaker and will practice my sharpening skills, review my wish list, do some researching and hang out here. I am trying to discipline myself to save up for the higher end knives instead of buying a knife just to get my fix.
Now back to sharpening.....

Well I like to sharpen. But what to do once everything is sharpened?
1. Read BF and learn more.
2. Work longer hours so you can buy more knives :)
3. See how sharp your knives really are by trying to cut differant things, rope, leather, rubber, plastic, sheet metal, tin cans, etc.
Then once your done doing that it will be time to resharpen.

BTW: When do i find out if I won one of them knives they are giving away on BF?
Should I give them my shipping address now ;)

You got to love this forum...

Now, this only works for production knives, but what I do is trade. I sometimes buy great knives that I don't need, if they are at a bargain price. I then try to combine them for higher end knives. I now own a Darrel Ralph Apogee (my first custom), and a MicroTech LCC D/A, which there is no way I could have saved up for all at once. I have a really hard time saving up large sums of money, but find that it's very easy to buy a $50-100 knife. I know, it would be so much better to just save up the money, but it is also fun to handle many different knives, while "saving up" for another.

Biding time by playing with what you've got, is fun. Like they said, Love the one you're with.

Ditto to what jmxcpter said.

Money that formerly was going to knives is now going to knife making supplies. I suppose this will never end...

Dan Dorn- Do you actually use the knives you accumulate to trade, or do you buy them only on spec and keep them pristine? Not sure I could do that. The idea of trading a knife is hard enough (did it once and finally got it back after 10 years), but to not use them while in your posession. All I can say is that you've got more willpower than me.

This probablly a nutty idea but at least it's original. When i get done buying a knife, I switch to another hobbie for a while mine is Paintball but that doesn't mean I stop playing with the knives :D
