Okay, so I got to thinking that I would like to play an old video game circa 1998 called Heretic II. I took a look on ebay and sure enough it was out there. So I got a copy for like 6 dollars and loaded it up on my fancy schmancy windows 7 pc. What do you know, it seems that Windows 7 (or more likely the latest Nvidia graphics cards) aren't backward compatible. So I did some poking around on line and found some things that were supposed to fix it. Nope didn't work. Sigh.

So the question is does any of you know a game similar to Heretic II? Something with a similar theme perhaps? I know I'm way out of date on the video game thing, the other game I still play all the time is Age of Empires III.

I'm not sure if Heretic II will work under XP, but if it does, Windows 7 Pro or better has an XP Compatability Mode.

VirtualBox (a free virtual machine) will let you install an older version of Windows with generic 3D drivers. You could install a copy of Win95 or Win98 in it then run the game. Thats probably the best way to install the older games. Works good for me.

Hmm didn't know that. I'll have to give it a try, thanks!

another similar one is DOSBox, I can't remember if heretic was a windows native game or MS-DOS..

System requirements for Heretic II Windows version:

* Windows® 95, 98 or NT 4.0 with 100% compatible computer system
* Pentium 166 MHz processor with 3D hardware accelerator or Pentium 233 MHz for software
* 32 MB RAM
* Quad-Speed CD-ROM drive
* DirectX 6.0 or 100% compatible drivers
* Joystick and mouse-supported (3-button mouse recommended)
* Supports network and internet play via TCP/IP
* Supports some OpenGL 3D accelerator cards. Consult your hardware manufacturer to determine compatibility

A genuine Intel Pentium MMX processor, fast video card, 64 MB RAM, an OpenGL compatible card and DirectX 6.0 graphic and sound drivers will give you much better gameplay.

I was a big fan of the original Heretic, a 1994 DOS game that ran very well on Windows 95. That would be my fallback recommendation.

If you don't mind going back to the world of Doom, Doom 2, Heretic and Hexen, you can run them all on Windows 7 using ZDoom, an enhanced port of the official Doom source code to Win32.
