Visited friends in the North Georgia mountains for Gobble-Day. With the women in the kitchen, we decided to venture out to the yard and pass some time throwing some hawks I brought with me.
Thrown from 18-20 feet out with double rotations - top to bottom .. Old vintage hawk with a makers mark of "KMJ" on a new hickory handle, middle: a recently made farrier's rasp hawk on a old piece of stained Hickory, and bottom (broken during the throw) a POS 'made in India' hawk on some kind of crappy wood handle that was worth about 20 throws before it broke. What do you expect for $20, right? The head is still good .. so I'll swap a piece of hickory on it and carry on.

The "KMJ" is a Keith Johnson hawk from a while back. I don't think he's making them anymore and when I asked someone at a gathering, they said the forge welds came apart. I looked up Keith on the net as he is in MN like myself, and trade him many years back an Osage bow for a couple of hawks.

This is what I found:http://www.greatriverforge.com/

Then I got to wondering about the forums and KMJ.

Needles to say Keith's work has improved:)

Yup .. its actually a "KRJ" mark on the hawk. What can I say, my eyes are old. Someone's 3rd party opinion of his work having bad forge welds or not .. it's one of my best throwing hawks. Straight trajectory and hits solid. It aint the prettiest .. but it's a keeper.
