Now dont get me wrong i'm a big fan of GEC - Ive seen two #74's in the flesh and almost bitten, I'm just not a fan of the two blade pattern and realy wanted a single blade - preferably the clip point, so when I hear GEC are releasing a new #74 i get excited - you cant imagine how disapointed I was

so tell me is it just a collectors piece or will it get used?

Where was the cotton sampling fraternity getting their knives before these?

I just picked up one in cocobolo as a gift. It's a unique knife for a very unique developer :D

There were not many cotton sampler variations released--I think they knew it was mostly going to be collectors after these. I really hope they do release single-blade clip and/or wharncliffe 74 variants.

A Darn visitor message has been left.

A superb field knife

The GEC model makes 1 heck of a skinner/fleshing knife. The Schatt is more of a chopper but is still quite useful, it has that abrupt point that is great for detail work.

Dave,

I have never chopped with this knife
I use it for pull cuts, and it works very well
It is the same as a sheepsfoot, but has much more mass to it

I look at that Schatt version, and I see a very useful blade shape. One of my favorite patterns is the whaler/rope knife, and this one looks to be a very nice, high quality version of the same.

The ones with the unsharpened extended ricasso and rounded blade, however, don't look that appealing to me.

If I understand correctly you use the point to scoop some cotton out of a bale. Then you pinch an edge of your cotton ball against the ricasso and pull the cotton ball away. How many wraps around the ricasso can you stretch that cotton? Longer cotton fibers are better for spinning.

Your pocket knife just told you how valuable that bale of cotton is.

Indeed. Since I don't do that very often, I don't see much use for the specialized blade. A huge sheepsfoot-type blade, on the other hand? Oh, yes.

now thats a bit of kit I could use

The 74 however is just a collector IMHO

which seems odd to me seeing as they've launched the F&F tool range with such promise...

I think they are the funniest looking knives and I agree it would have to be aimed as being a collector piece mostly.

What you cannot see in the photo of the S&M Sampler is the blade is at an angle to the perpendicular
So when you pull the knife back, the blade will cut a wedge or plug
So I am not using it for cutting cotton bales
But in the field when u pull the knife back, the angle of the blade makes a very efficient cutter
And the ATS34 holds a wicked edge

So my comment and excellent field knife
