Earlier I posted for opinions on two different color variations of the Paramilitary and many responded that I should just go straight for the Paramilitary D2!

So why the D2 over their regular production? Heavier user? Better collectibility? Are your D2's users or safe queens?

Please, lets have your opinions D2 owners or owners to be!

The D2 is a good $20+ more than the reg. production models from what I've found.

CPM-D2 is a amazing steel that sharpens and polishes better than S30V and has slightly better edge retention. Combine that with the fact that the para is already a great knife and you end up with a really great knife that's on the level of most that are twice as much. Spydercos sprint runs are also usually held to higher tolerances.

Wow sounds nice and when you say sharpens/polishes better than s30v, do you mean it is easier or overall end product is just much better?

I have 2 S30V Paras and 1 D2. I rotate them all pretty much evenly for EDC. The only difference I've noticed in performance is that the D2 seems to be slightly, slightly sharper straight from the factory than both S30V blades. But that's like saying your sports car tops out at 175 mph compared to 170 mph. For the record, I am making that comparison based on cutting coupons out of the newspaper...classy, I know. Other than that, I can't really tell a difference. I've been rotating them all for a few months now and haven't needed to sharpen any of them yet, so I won't speak to how they sharpen. I bought all of them from online retailers, and the D2 was the least expensive. As far as I know, you can now only get it on the secondary market, likely making it more expensive than the S30V versions.

Bottom line...I'd either buy the least expensive version you can find, or pick whichever color floats your boat the most. Good luck.

CPM D2 steel has smaller grain than CPM S30V, I believe. For that reason, the steel can take a sharper, finer edge. I don't know how much easier or harder it is to sharpen (though I don't think that there would theoretically be much difference.)

thanks everyone for your 2cents. Exactly what I was looking to hear. Although the D2 is nice the extra $30 is that thrilling imo so think I shall go with the s30v!

once again thanks to all of you

Spend the extra $30.00!
I've edc'd my D2 Para nearly daily for over a year now. Yes CPM D2 is capable of taking a much finer edge than S30V, It also holds that edge much longer and is no more difficult to sharpen. I don't have the same chipping problems that I have with S3OV in hard use situations either. Corrosion has never been an issue for me either.
The D2 Para is invaluable to me, it's also the only knife that I own that I've purchased a 2nd one as a "backup" too.

I have 4 para's and my D2 gets much more use than the others. I agree with the last poster, spend the extra 30 bucks. It's also more collectible than the others if you care about that type of thing. I do notice the sharper edge to the D2 and it hold it's edge well. It is amazingly sharp, shaving sharp actually.

I would have went with any P Mil. I just happened to end up with the D2.

I've been pleasantly surprised from day 1 with the performance of the CPMD2. I thought it was going to be a bear to sharpen and I was dead wrong! The even better part was that I didn't need to find out for months because of the excellent edge retention.

it is my understanding that the CPM D2 batch Spyderco got & used in Millies & Paras was the only/last one the knife world would ever see - this may help you justify the extra 30$, if performances alone are not enough

going to go against the crowd here, I have owned and used both, and I actually like the s30v better.

it seems to have more "Bite" than the D2 version, which I prefer. YMMV

I liked the FG scales way more though.... but the digicam is really growing on me. I wish they made them in a plain transparent color, like the digicam minus the top layer that has the digicam pattern on it.

Where are you finding these d2's for sale? I sold/ gave away mine and have regretted it since. I have been looking for another one the last couple of days with no luck. Every store I look in is out of stock, the only one I have found they want 220$ for. Im contemplating getting a fully serrated s30v one instead.

All the reasons to get the D2 Para mentioned are exactly why I have a stash of them NIB in my closet just for me :D

Ebay is the only place I'm finding them.

CPM D2 is great stuff, it gets sharper and has better edge retention than S30V while being easier to sharpen due to less burring. Spyderco runs CPM D2 at 62 RC, 3-4 points harder than S30V, which probably accounts for it's excellent performance. It also is more chip resistant than S30V for me, so I say go for the CPM D2 model.

I really hope the new Crucible tries D2 again. I'd love to see it in more models. Normal D2 is readily available, but the CPM version is very nice.

I'd like to have a paramilie full ti framelock with a deep carry clip and Bob Dozier's HTed D2 on it. now that would spank any CPM D2, I think.....
