So, You Have Bronchitis, and You're in a Survival Scenario...

I actually do have bronchitis right now. I am feeling weak and helpless. I had it last year too, and this leads me to consider the possibility I am more susseptible to it now after contracting it after a simple cold two years consecutively. I can't help but think that if I were in a survival situation or "on my own" I would be dead. Not a pleasant thought. Any thoughts?

If you smoke quit. Then get down to the grocery store and pick up a box of Celestial Seasonings Wellness Tea. (I think that's the name of it). It has copious amounts of Ecchinacea, vitamin c, and zinc. The stuff works wonders for me. I haven't had a serious cold or bronchial issue in years.

You feel that way, but the reality is you're not. Sure, you're weakened, but you are actually still quite able. If you were in a suvival situation, you'd just have to be tough and deal with it. You're stronger than you think you are.

I haven't smoked in seven years, since I was 25. I'm not sure why I am having an issue now. I'll try your tea though. Thanks for the tip!

As odd as it sounds, I have found that my bronchitis gets better if I go to the gym and run on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I had been down with bronchitis for several months and not going to the gym. Finally I said "F it, I'm going anyway!" My lungs were pretty tight and wheezy when I got there, but 10 minutes of running and I was feeling mostly back to normal. Works better for me than albuterol. I was getting a new HFA every month or so. I haven't refilled my prescription in 3 months now that I am back in the gym.

Edit. I don't smoke but my bronchitis is brought on by seasonal allergies.

Me too!!! That is what the doctor said and I was in shock. Had no idea allergies could have such a powerful effect on pulmonary function. I'm moving out of central California next year in part for that reason. One of the worst places on earth to live for seasonal allergies.

I have trouble understanding how allergies trigger this though (from an emotional standpoint really). And why now after all this time am I having issues? I am having this whole "why me" crisis and feel like a weak P.O.S.. It is really kind of devastating and depressing. I'll try exercise this evening and see if that irons some of it out. I've got to get out of the house. I've been couped up for 9 days now. MISERABLE.

In his book Deep Survival (Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why) the author, Laurence Gonzales, writes about how a person can will themselves dead, yet others, despite terrible injuries and harsh conditions, find within themselves the stoicism, humour and sheer determination to survive.

Its a case of putting away the pain, and just getting on with the sole job of going on.

Every day you wake up is a good day, the rest is up to you....

You should get a pneumonia shot for sure. My son get it pretty often and that really helped him.

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis Iboschi... hope you feel better soon.

An interesting fact about allergies- Our bodies evolved for such a long time alongside multitudes of parasites, that we are now conditioned to fight them, or at least neutralize their effects on us. However, in the modern world there is distinct lack of parasites. This absence leaves our bodies with a whole system with nothing to do, so it starts to react to other things; dust, pet dander, pollen, you-name-it. Hence, some people have pretty extreme allergies. People who have parasites are devoid of allergic reactions- the defenses that cause allergic reactions are doing their original job, fighting parasites.

menthol ciagrettes can relieve it a little.

i did that in the jungle a couple years ago when i started getting pneumonia.

that mint in the lungs does something good in the short term. just a couple puffs. not chain smoking.

it gave me instant relief.

i don't smoke otherwise BTW.

a lot of new medicines are going to be administered via pulmonary.

This is interesting and makes sense. Third world societies have almost no instance of allergies. That would be in line with that theory. I wonder if it is too late to give myself some kind of mild parasite? To those with advice and well wishes, I thank you! I am still curious what would/could you do in a survival situation with a similar malady. Mint is a curious remedy. Rest seems obligatory but difficult if that were the scenario.

Do you have a fever? Productive cough? Your weakness may indicate a more serious problem then just "bronchitis". I don't know your age, other medical conditions, prior immunizations or current medications but I advise you to seek professional medical care now.
No offense intended but the comment on pneumoniae vaccines is wrong and if you have a serious condition the other comments may only delay you from having definitive care.

Inner bark tea of eastern white pine is an excellent expectorant and full of vitamin C and more (sorry, not in California).

Commom Mullein as a tea is a fairly effective remedy for coughs and lung disorders. Steaming the leaves and inhaling also can help relieve your sinuses. Very commom plant found in every state I think. Lots of research can be found on the web.

Your other choice is bending your doctor's ear for a prescription in advance. Let us know if that works out for you please.

Check for sure with your doctor but I will tell you that I had a few bouts with pneumonia and bronchitis and it was my wife that noticed that I would come down with this in the spring and fall sometimes bad enough to need to see the doc to get an antibiotic. It eventually became obvious that there was a pattern. When I was younger I use to just fight through it without realizing it. When I started to come down with bronchitis secondary to the allergies, my wife suggested that I use Claritain. That has worked great for me. When I take it I have no issues with pollen in the spring and molds in the fall. Beats the hell out of getting antibiotics to fight the secondary respiratory and sinus infections I use to get. I am not saying this is a cure for you but you might want to run it past your doc, see what he says. For me it has worked really well.

Forty years ago, when I was in my late 20's, I got bronchitis every year for about six years. I was living in New Jersey. These episodes usually involved a trip to the doctor and a shot of penicillin and tablets. He was old school, and he said "you can have a little schnaps with that too." Well I took a lot of "schnaps" to the point of breaking into a sweat and "breaking" the fever.

I've been taking "a little schnaps" for the last 40 years, can't remember the last time I had a cold, flu or bronchitis. I'm not suggesting you take up drinking, I'm just saying....:D

When I was a kid, we were always playing in the dirt, building forts and such for our toys. I even remember eating dirt. I think I got immunized to a lot of things
