So I had been keeping my stock EP stones in water all the time until I tried to use them last night and noticed a few are pulling away from the blanks they're mounted on. Anybody else have this happen? Is this because I kept them in the water for too long?

I wouldn't say it is a common problem but I've heard of it happening a few times. You need to get some 3M spray adhesive to reattach the stones.

It's generally considered to be a bad idea to constantly soak them, as I understand it can degrade the binder over time. Fortunately, in this case your solution is simple. As SSblood said, all you need to do is get some 3M "Super 77" adhesive spray. Mask off the sides and top of the stone so they don't catch any overspray, as well as the part of the blank you don't want coated, and give it a squirt (Make sure they're good and dry first). Press them together, and you're good as new!

Best Answer.

Just a few minutes before you use them is all you need, just enough so that they stay damp and don't soak up the water as quickly as you put it on when you're sharpening with them. :)

I just started soaking them in an old Tupperware just this past weekend while sharpening a few knives. Guess I shouldn't leave them in the water too long.

I generally toss mine into the water when I start setting things up, and just keep them there while I'm doing my sharpening, only pulling out the specific one I'm using. When I'm done, I pull them out of the water and lay them out on a paper towel to dry out.

Yes, this happened to me with the coarse stones. No need to soak them anymore.

It has been my experience that soaking for 5-15 minutes is adequate, followed by a bit of water from a spray bottle periodically while in use.

That's what I had been doing, pulled them out to sharpen a knife a couple nights ago and noticed that they were pulling away
