Soaking in mineral oil...

As I've been smoothing/polishing the G10 and exposed spine of the tang on my SAR-8, I've noticed that there are hair-line gaps between the G10 and the tang. As far as I'm aware, Busse doesn't use epoxy on their handle scales, right?

I'm considering filling a glass with mineral oil and soaking the handle end of the knife in it for a while to let some work its way into the gaps to prevent corrosion under the handles. This knife is gonna see its fair share of moisture this year, and I'd rather avoid even surface rusting under the scales if possible.

There's nothing that the mineral oil will hurt with the G10 or the INFI, correct? Even if soaked overnight?

Nothing short of acid will hurt G10:thumbup:
I have been using REM oil with good results.

Mineral oil won't hurt anything. If you use the knife at all for food prep, I would use food-grade mineral oil, and definitely steer away from things that are not fit for human consumption.

Yeah, gun oil will leave a pretty nasty taste in your mouth if you don't clean your blade off before food prep. Found that out slicing fruit, nothing like the taste of nasty oily apples.

Good idea to let it soak overnight. G10 and infi are both fine. G10 in general does not absorb but a minuscule amount of oil superficially that makes it look better. I am going to re-handle all of mine soon and use marine goop under the slabs for the very purpose of salt water use. In fact I am going to pick up my new work bench and vise today! :)

Yeah "OILY APPLES" Would'nt taste very good I guess, especially gun oil! :barf: :D

I thought so... felt like a dumb question, but when it comes to a knife this expensive I'd rather ask a dumb question than take a chance. I knew it wouldn't hurt the G10, I suppose I was more worried about the INFI. Never had a problem wiping it down with mineral oil, but I've never soaked it overnight like this. :D

I soak all my knives in mineral oil. A quick wipe down and buff with an old bath towel and they are all shiny new and good to go

or you could just not worry about it. Nothing going to happen under your scales unless you are diving in salt water with it. Even then...........rinse it off.

If you are interested in finding the best rust protection here are some links with comparative tests and reviews

I've heard from a buddy of mine that collects swords that "barrel butter" works like a charm. He says that once it's on, if you touch the blade, the grease from you fingers won't even stick. you can watch your finger print disappear from the blade, like steam on a mirror.

When searching, I found a few posts that disagree with that, with people saying they found rust under the scales when they removed them.
