SOB question. No drama I promise!

Hello all. Been away awhile but this SOB is the first blade in a bit that has completely got my interest piqued. Not counting the Team Gemini but I have a weak spot for blood grooves and The Walking Dead so I discount that one!

Love the blade, even the thinness of the stock. Here is my dilemma. Are all the slabs going to have that brick pattern? Even the G10? Thanks in advance.

Pete

Its a cool design for a new machined handle....however you might ask if options are available...They generally come at a price upgrade but if the pattern is not to your liking worth the question...:)

I will add to my previous reply.... I wanted to make sure the tan and black g10 I ordered would not look like a checkered board (felt like a stupid question, but was a concern). Lexi said no, so I figure that means the standard patterns are used over the brick texture which is what I want.

This is where I wish Jerry would actually photograph the finished product in the different combos. Or at least most of the more common ones. I love this blade. I resist using my old school Busses because of my perception of their value unused but the SOB would bridge that quite nicely. Not a fan of the brick pattern though. I don't like the look and I don't think it will feel all that great in the hand either. Love the old school look though. Definitely a winner.

Pedropcola,

Funny thing, I was reading your post a few minutes ago when the postman rang. I now have a SOB in my hands :)

Like you, I had a negative reaction to the brick wall pattern. I did not especially like the looks, and like you I suspected it would feel odd in hand.

FEAR NOT!

In the photos, the pattern appears to be very pronounced. Well, it is not at all. Maybe it is just mine, but the pattern in very, very subtle - at least in black canvas. Truly, at first glance, I thought they left the pattern off the knife! It is that subtle. Even knowing what to look for, it does not really look like the brick wall of the photos. The vertical channels especially blend into the lines produced by the micarta layering of the contours.

It is also very shallow. This I was wondering about. I figured that if I did not like the brick wall, and if the channels were shallow enough, I would just sand off some micarta and be done with it. Well, the channels are shallow enough that that would be no problem, but I now don't feel the need.

Really, the contrasting micarta layers just overpower those subtle bricks. I simply can't believe how different it is in hand vs photos! Oh, and you can't really feel them, either. Also, there just isn't that much OF it. At its widest, the pattern is 7/8" wide (these are thick handle slabs, and there is a lot of rounding off - no brick wall on the rounded areas).

I am quite pleased by this because I was really worried that the pattern might ruin the knife for me. Nah! (whew!)

Ok, for those with similar concerns, remember that this might be more of an issue on other handle materials!

Now the KNIFE . . . Holy WOW!!! JUST what I hoped for, and perhaps a bit more. You know how when you are really - REALLY - looking forward to something, and you have that sick feeling in your stomach that just won't go away, and it is saying, "you are going to be disaPPOINTed . . . ."
Well, go ahead and ignore that feeling. This knife is truly marvelous. I can't yet decide if I like it better than my stripper 3B2, and that's saying a lot! - Hey, wait a minute, who cares?! I just found its perfect mate!!!

Do you want to know what the old Hogs did in the past if we didn't like the way the handle felt?

We got some sand paper and sanded them to our liking..

Yes that is always an option. Glad to hear it looks and feels better in person. Thanks for the info.

NO! Man, sounds really like an uphill battle. Next, you'll tell me that hogs USED and SHARPENED their Busses!:eek::eek:

Sorry, but it is true, we used them too…I know, quit a concept but we did.
Good thing there are 1000's of Safe Queens out there to pick from now If we need a new knife ;)

Here is a couple a got from Garth with hand shaped black canvas and smooth bolts. I just got lucky on the dark color of the canvas. :)

Safe Queens??? Auuuuh they make those?? I generally take it to the KMG and shape it until its comfortable for my big paws....:D

I use plenty of my Busse'. I just don't use the ones that I think are worth more $$$$ than I am willing to risk putting a chip in. (Please no busses' don't chip stories either, I use them and I have chips, not rolls, to prove it) The SOB is a great size and I love the design but I was very curious about the pattern because if they were deep that would be a lot of sanding and probably remove more material than I want to. I just would like to see some pics of the actual product in micarta and G10 just to see what I am buying before I shell out some cash. I hate selling knives so I tend to not buy unless it is just what I want. This appears to be real close to the tipping point.

Well yes, indeed, I believe I mentioned one CAN sand them. . . funny, regardless!
And no, no safe queens in my home. SO despite the fact that the pattern was more subdued than I expected, I went ahead last night and pulled out the 80 grit paper. Took about an hour, but I am glad I did it. Got a really nice high-contrast pattern out of it, and of course, the fit is custom. It did not necessitate the removal of too much material, IMHO.
Now if i could just figure out the Photobucket thing, I could display the results!
