SOB with hand-smoothed Micarta -- add spacer?

All,

I thinking about ordering an SOB (Son of Badger) with hand-smoothed Micarta handles. Since the hand smoothing process removes a little material, I'm also thinking about adding a spacer to bring the thickness back. Good idea or bad (especially from anyone who has the hand-smoothed version)?

Thanks.
John

edit: found my answer. btw the amount of material removed will be compensated with the belly of the sob, so I think you will be fine. If it does not work for you, just send it in and get your spacer's.

Personally I really like the handle as is. I dont think it needs liners, but I also dont think they make the handle feel too large either. If you like the look then go for it.

Garth,

I'm going to order an SOB today or tomorrow from Lexi. I've decided to forget the liners. I like the look of hand-smoothed but realize there's a little material shaved off in the process, making the handle a bit thinner. Should I go hand-smoothed or just get the regular Black Micarta with brick pattern -- which feels better in hand? Tell me what to do and I'll pass it on to Lexi ;-)

I would guess the brick pattern is cut into the already smooth handles, as the brick pattern is the only texture. Leaving out the brick would then result in the same size handle, but smooth.

Somebody at the shop could let you know for sure -but you might not want to wait until the 4th of July to call. Forecast for the 4th calls for a high probability of hamburger storms and downpours (so to speak) of alcoholic beverages. ;)

jazub,

Are you saying this issue of the SOB handle doesn't have higher priority than drinking at Busse???

Once the drinking has temporarily ceased and an almost full recovery has occurred, we can revisit this topic. I had thought the hand smoothing would remove material but you may be onto something ;-)

You need someone with both to give you an opinion...but I have the hand-smoothed black micarta with red liners. Medium sized hands (glove size) and the handle is freaking fantastic...fills my grip well, but as Garth said, definitely not "too much" handle by any means.

I suspect you'd be happy with either, but I love the liners in mine :D

Naaaaawwwwww ;)

Looking forward to the handle answer myself. The SOB is so dope, a hand smoothed backup is a definite possibility.

I've got a Custom Shop SOB and a Tiger hide one, the custom is thinner than a regular one will be if you should choose to sand away the brick pattern and the wood slabs are pretty much the same thickness across the length of the grip, they both feel incredibly secure in hand so my verdict would be, at least for me personally that thick or thin this handle is one of the best handles in a loooong time :D

Great photos Lennox, thanks! Looks like the standard micarta handle is fairly beefy. Hand smoothing probably won't be too different.
