Ok Gents,

I've got my basic Emerson collection nearly complete and as most of you immediately loudly voiced I was still lacking a CQC-7. I did however just order a plain edge, black SOCFK. Thoughts? DO I reeeally still need a 7?

Here is what I have thus far:

1. CQC-15 Full-Size, Partial Serration, Black
2. Combat Karambit - Black
3. Gentleman Jim - Black
4. Mini-Commander, Plain Edge, Black (2006 vintage)

I say yes. If you're putting together a collection of Emerson knives, then you most certainly need to own at least one 7 variant. But you can change it up a bit - if you're getting a SOCFK-B and you think its too similar to a CQC-7B - then get a 7AW or a 7V. But The 7 model is kind of the standard.

I've said it a million times - that's the love/hate I have with emerson. There are SO many variations out there that there's always another model you need to pick up next.

Also - I think your collection is begging for a A-100 variant as well

I differ from the others, I've got an SOCFK as well, and I'm considering selling the CQC-7. The blades are very similar, but the SOCFK just feels so much better in the hand.

I agree. The ergonomics on the SOCFK look very comfortable. The CQC-7 looks just a bit too block-like and overly linear.

You definitely need a 7! Hell I have about 15 variations of the 7! I can't get enough of them. :D

My CQC-7AW feels great in hand. BUT the SOCFK knife is a 7 blade with the even better ergos of the SPECWAR handle. So, in a way, it's a 7 variant.

Yeah but if the OP stated that it is an Emerson collection. If that is the case, than an SOCFK is not a 7, so if he wishes a complete collection than a 7 would be a must.

If however, it is a collection of Emerson users, then I would say no he would not NEED a 7 as he has stated he doesn't like the ergos on it, and therefore I assume would not be inclined to carry it over the SOCFK.

you should know the protocol around here by now. When in doubt get both :D. Just don't sell them once you have them , you'll hate yourself later

I'm sitting here with a cqc-7b in the checkout wondering if this should be my first Emerson. Thought I'd ask u guys if its the right "first Emerson". I kind of like the non-wave look.

NB, I think that a 7 is the 'ultimate' first Emerson. After all, there will be plenty of time to get the rest.

The "7" is iconic. Never liked any tanto folders till this one. Perfect utility knife.

Reviving an older thread because my first Emerson is overdue - CQC-7BW SF or SOCFK-B SF? The dimensional differences are noted. I'm sold on the B SF blade. The SOCFK looks like it would be more comfortable in the hand, albeit a larger/heavier package. Impressions from folks who have held/used/owned both would be appreciated. I carry diverse knives and all are used for work (from AFOII, Sodbuster, Opinel and small Insingo to French customs from D.Ponson, M.Moing, and J.Grandjean). Thanks for your help.

I originally posted in this thread in 2013 stating I liked the SOCFK better than the 7. Having spent more time with both models, I now believe the 7 wins over the SOCFK. As mentioned by others it's more pocket friendly, it's a classic Emerson design, and the ergos are surprisingly good for something that looks like a tiny brick.

I no longer own an SOCFK, although I have considered buying another, while I have 8, 7s in my collection. I carry a 7 everyday on the weak side as a backup blade and sometimes one on the strong side.

Go with the 7!

ETA: As for comfort in the hand, I have girly hands and the SOCFK handle just seems to hit my fingers wrong. It's not nearly as comfortable to use as the 7.
