say a 66 yr old man is collecting SS and he marries say a 47yr old woman who has never worked or worked only a very little. if he dies say at 68....can she (at 49) then collect his SS or will she have to wait until SHE is 65 to collect his SS??

Thanks.....Bill

I could be wrong but unless she's worked and contributed a minimum amount to SS for herself, she will not get the man's SS benefits period.

The woman should get a SS summary once a year which gives a summary of how many quarter worked, I think the minimum is 9 or 12 quarters paying SS then she becomes qualified.

The widow will receive the survivors benefit when she reaches social security eligibility age, OR ,if she still has minor children she will receive it until the youngest is 18 (then she has to wait until 65 to start getting it again). She need not have ever worked, as long as her spouse had his 40 quarters in. The marriage must have been long enough to qualify ( no marrying a gal on your deathbed to help her out), IIRC, it is 9 months right now.
