Society collapses, as we know it today. No grocery stores, no electricity, no gasoline, no municipal water, wells with electric pumps inoperable, etc.

Do you stay where you are now? Or, do you migrate to another geography? If so, where do you go and what does your lifestyle become? Hunter/gatherer, farming, nomadic, what?

I'm set up, so I'll just stay right here. My well's artesian (don't need to pump it, it just comes out of the ground all by itself), lots of good soil, decent weather, relative isolation, nearest town within 100 miles is only 4000 people, defensible location, lots of trees for fuel, wild game of all sorts passing right by the house, you name it. We moved out of the city and it's the best thing we ever did. We now enjoy no traffic, clean air, lower cost of living, relative self sufficiency and beautiful surroundings. As a side benefit, we are now much less vulnerable to disasters of all sorts. If society collapses, I just let the dog out and unlock the gun cabinet, then go back to whatever I was doing...

Never be a refugee. Set yourself up now, while you are able to, and make a good plan. Know where you're going if you have to leave, and make sure there's something there for you when you get there. Better yet, make the choice to live somewhere that you're unlikely to have to leave.

I have lots of relatives in a rural area a gas tank away to the south. I think that's where we'd go. It's too built up here to play "Mad Max."

Even though we live in a semi-rural area with a river nearby, there would be lots of competition for the available resources. If possible, the wife and I would be heading north to a friends land with lots of wood to burn, good hunting and abundant water resources.

Alot of people are going to be clogging up the roads. If I have to leave I'm not far from the Potomac river. Down the river to the Cheasapke bay, and down to the sea coast. I think I'll take to the water. A good boat will get you far if the wind is good, and fishing will fill an empty belly.

Once at the sea, turn south along the coast to warmer climate.

Everyone here will die. Without imports, we wont have most of the things we need for sustenance. I don't know of many natural water sources on the island, that you would want to drink from. Most crops are imported, and there is little game on the island as well.

I think I'd try to find a way to get to Molokai that will probably be the best bet.

Is canabalism an option? My neighbors down the street piss me off.

I stay right here, eat fish and seals, deer, the occasional human. The island is a perfect hide out, and very sustainable.

I have thought about this a couple of times. I live in Japan and lets say there is some kind of Super Flu leak and miarculously my family and I survive but not many other folks do. I think I would head for the continent probably starting in Korea. To get there I would take a light aircraft from Narita, fly to an airport closer to the coast, refuel and make it to land in a couple of ass twitching hours. Then I would get a small diesel truck and fill it with fuel, tyres and food and make my way to Europe.

After that I pretty much wouldnt care.

I would not like to face a Michigan winter without electricity. However I still think I would head farther north maybe to the UP. More game and less people. Maybe sail out to Makinaw Island and set up my own kingdom. :D

(I thought I would get an M1A2 and fuel to get down south, then . . . . :D )

Since I live in Fredericksburg VA, I would pretty much stay where I am at. Plenty of squirrel in the yard, have my own weapons for self defence, and air rifles for the squirrels...haha. Since I am pretty close to the Rappahanock River, I can fish anytime I need to. Now, the hardest thing for me to do would be to get the wife to change her city slicker ways. I grew up on the farm, she is straight from Brooklyn, NY. I guess opposites do attract. I would also have to teach my kids on how to prepare fish, skin squirrel, and basic self defense tactics. Oh, and I would probably be carrying atleast 2 knives on me at all times. Ammo I think I have enough of honestly. With my 2 .45s and my M1A and Remington 700 PSS, I dont think I would have anything to worry about honestly...hahahah

I know where you live man. I used to live in Hawaii when I was stationed ithere while serving in the Navy about 8 yrs ago. I lived directly behind Pecos's right off Kam Hwy. After you pass Arizona Memorial, stay on Kam like going to Pearl Ridge Mall, in the curve there was a country bar there called Pecos. I lived in a house directly behind the building. What fond memories of that place.

I will become a robber baron.

Ya got that right.
I figure when I run out of squirrels and pidgeons,
I'll start on the cats and yuppies.

hm. i'd stay here probly. maybe go a little farther south to avoid the Alaskan-like winter, but it probly wouldn't be absolutely necessary.

i guess it'd depend on the terms society collapses under.

if it was from something nuclear, or asteroid impact, you'd probly have to move around to find available hunting, in relation to the impact point. right?

Edit:
and same goes to vegetation. there's plenty of blueberries, raspberries/blackberries, cranberries, potatoes, broccoli, and other edible, but not so desirable plants around here.

i actually live a 5 minute walk away from a school-owned farm. they have tons of fresh food year round. that's probly the first place i'd scout for food. bring back anything and everything i can carry and distribute it to a few neighbors.

I am still set from Y2K. Plenty of ammo. Variety of weapons and hunting implements from BB guns through bow n arrows up to shotguns and assorted caliber rifles. Hand tools of all kinds. My own water sources. Still lots of canned and dry goods, batteries and fuel in well rotated stock. Bug out localities and routes identified. Several nearish neighbors who can be trusted and depended upon.
and blades from 1" to 3' to choose from....
Bring it on.

OK I'll play along. I survive the asteroid strike and ensuing social chaos and widespread disease.

Personally I don't think there's any way you can sustain yourself for long just hunting if everybody else is reduced to the same thing. The nutritional value of all the rodents in your neighborhood is one lean diet plan. The deer population would not recover for decades if we were forced to eat 90% of them.

I would go after the biggest game of all, cattle. I would acquire few live piglets and some chickens and raise them for food. I would then plant crops. If you aren't set up for long term agriculture you cannot survive for very long at all.

You also can't do this alone. You would be forced to form new communities to deal with the commom needs of the survivors. This "lone warrior of the wastelands" stuff is good fantasy but poor strategy. A small town set up for cooperative farming and mutual defense and reconstruction would be the smallest viable system. Even these communities would have to form alliances and trade to survive.

The best bet would be to form a small private army and offer the Amish protection. Actually that ain't a bad book idea. Mac

Hi everyone

first post here . seeing as to the fact that I live as far south as a Canadain gets I would head north about a tank of gas worth of distance to a few of my better kept huntin spots and live like I do a couple times a year .

You just got to love beening any where that you have no choice but to carry a shotgun to do your business.

Why not start with the yuppies' cats? Im sure they are tastier than the pidgeons. Dont forget sewer rats, they got plenty of meat on em.

Serious answer: Id head my way up the Hudson valley, aqueduct trail to Bear Mountain area or maybe Harriman State Park. NYC is not the place to be if society collapses.
