Hey Guys,

What are the best long lasting socks? I have herd that Smart Wool and Bridgedale Summitare good.

I like Carhartt wool socks, they seem to last a good while. Mostly I wear the wool socks from Costco. Day to day, when its not really freaking cold, I wear cotton crew socks. I know a crab fishermen/welder who swears by the Smart Wool socks. He's kind of fussy, so he probably knows what hes talking about.
 
Smartwool are very nice but they don't last very long. So, go to STP and get them cheap.

Bridgedales have lasted a bit longer for me and have been of very high quality. The Bdales I have are not as plush as my Smartwools, but, they are nice.

None of these stretchy, fluffy socks are as tough as the solid boiled-wool(?) type.


I also wear the wool socks from Costco. Almost like a Smartwool, not as nice, but much more durable. Cheap and the colors suck but they work great.
 
I wear Smartwool and REI Light Hiker socks. The REI socks are especially great because they have an elasticated area around the top and arch of your foot that prevents them from moving around on your feet over time. They are all merino wool; warm in winter and dry and cool in summer.
 
If you like Smartwool socks (and who doesn't) you should try the Redhead brand knockoffs at Bass Pro Shops.

I use the Costco/Sam's Club wool socks daily in the fall and winter. Use and replace as necessary. I keep some of the better socks for trekking or more extreme days. In the summer I like the DeFeet style socks, light and breathable. I can also use the summer sock as a liner to the heavy socks when necessary.
 
Smartwool are the best I've used. The newer running socks don't last as well as the older versions, but the light hikers I generally use have lasted me well over 2 years a pair. I have heard that Darn Tough socks are even better.
 
I love my smartwools. Benefits include warmth, comfort, style, and size (stretchy!). When I blew out my ankle last year, they were the only sock I owned that would fit above the ace bandage I wore. As noted above, some pairs will have limited durability - 1 year of relatively heavy use maybe. Since I started using them, I haven't bought anything else. I think perhaps the 1-2 year lifespan is designed so that I always have something I want for Christmas.
 
WigWam makes my favorite socks, but I also really like the Costco merino ones. They are really hard to beat at four for $10 or however they come these days.
 
Out of all the socks Ive tried (smartwool, thorlo, lorpen, rei, cabelas etc.) nothing even comes close to Darn Tough. They still feel like they are brand new every time I put them on.

Smart Wool are tough. I bought two pairs and wore them on alternate days. They lasted about three years. Wigwam socks in their lighter weights are very good, but their heavier weight socks are junk. They are not warm and I have a pair that the stitching started to go within 60 days. Patagonia makes good heavy weights, but they mat too much with sweat. I recently bought a pair of wool socks that are some of the best I have ever used. I tossed the packaging and plan on returning to the same store to get more and determine the name brand. They have a symbol on them that looks like an Oakley emblem. The next type I want to try are Filson's. I have yet to try one of their products that are less than fantastic, but the price is rude.

+1 on the REI socks. And they usually have sale on them every other month or so.
 
I've been wearing Wigwam Merino Comfort Hiker socks for around two and a half years now and really like them. 80% of the time I wear Merino wool socks and find them very comfortable. BTW Sportsmans Warehouse brand Merino wool socks also work really well for me.

I've probably tried almost every wool sock out there, once I got on to Darn Tough I don't see me purchasing anything else
 
SmartWool ... awesome socks.

I have about ten pairs ... started buying them in the mid 1990s ... none of them have a hole yet. I hang to dry which probably helps. I love the mountaineer version - super comfortable. Total party for your feet.
