I haven't been poking around on this forum for nearly year. I had been cheerfully going through life with my Wegner jr. and a bundle of fillet knives. Well, it's good to be back, and it didn't take much reading for me to see stuff about the "SOCOM Elite."

I'm ready for something new. I was considering a mini SOCOM but, I've already got a small folder. So how about a SOCOM Elite? A 4" totally all business looking blade for those not-at-the-office days. So I went to some of the on-line dealers and all I'm seeing is either SOCOMs, or S. Elite automatics. Automatics are illegal in my state. (I can carry a Glock stuffed to the gills with .40 Corbon hollow points, but not an automatic knife.) Does MT make a S. Elite manual? If so, whose got them and what price range are we looking at? I understand this is a very well made, fit for daily use, last a lifetime, knife. Thanks, Jack.

Try Mike Payne at Knives and Things: http://personal.mem.bellsouth.net/~mikepayn

Another guy to try is Roger at Bayou LaFourche: http://www.knifeworks.com/

You won't regret getting a SOCOM Elite. I've got two Elites (one old-style grind, one new) and love them both - even more than my LCC. Despite their hefty size, they seem to nestle down in the hand. Locks up like a bank vault too.

Socom Elite-Manual has the new microbar locking system. This lock is said to be 3 times stronger than MT's normal liner lock. If you are going for a "user" get the stonewash finish. I agree with every thing thats been said, this is a heck of a knife. Strong, well built, and will last you a lifetime!
BTW, try Patrick at www.tripleaughtdesign.com you will not go wrong with him. Great guy to deal with!

As is indicated above this knife will be a great counterpart to the small light weight folder I normally carry. It also sounds as if these knives fall in the catagory of "the good stuff." Everything I've read places them at the top in design, quality, lock-up, edge holding, and great (if even a bit sinister)looks.

What I'm puzzled about are the blade finish options. What is "bead blasted," and "stone washed?" I looked at the pictures and while the surfaces of those two (I'm not interested in black) appear slightly different, it's impossible to judge how they differ by looking at a photograph. I suppose I'm less intested in esthetics than I am in corrosion resistence. And, the knife is going to get used - slicing sandwiches, apples, oranges (rinse well after that one!), carboard, rope, fishing line, perhaps an occassional salmon eviceration project, and whatever else knives get used for. Which surface holds up better, or is it a toss up? And, which one do you prefer and why? Thanks for the interest and information. Jack.

Under the conditions that you state and considering ease of maintenance- get a stone washed.

Bead blasted blades take a little more maintenance and my time spent in your state- the thing will never be dry

! The stone washed is a matter of preference- I like the appearance and it begs to be used. Scratches do not show as easily. I feel that it is a great finish for a using knife.

Jack,
The stonewash finish has a bit of a galvanized steel look. A little polishing will fix that! The sw will give better corrosion resistance because it seals the pores of the steel. You can run your finger over the finish and feel how smooth it is. BB will allow moisture in to the steel. Taking care of the knife correctly is the key, since that would prevent any problems with corrosion. Still, the sw will hide minute scratchs better than the BB. On the sw they sorta blend in while on the BB they sorta stand out.
