Thinking of Getting a Springfield Socom 2 before Obummer gets into power.
looking for the Best Ammo and Mags and such.
anyone own one and got any Pros Cons.
Thx
Dom

Very loud, lot's of muzzle blast, and expensive...lol. I shot one of the original Socoms (only difference is all the additional mounting rails) and then bought a full sized M1A instead. If you don't mind all the muzzle blast, the signature it raises, and the increased perceived recoil then it should work fine for you. Buy Springfield mags, they seem to work the best.

As for ammo I just bought a case of the Prvi Partizan .308 168gr. Boattail Hollow Point Match Grade Ammo and it shoots MOA in both my Springfield and my FN/FAL. It is getting hard to find however. The Prvi Partizan 145gr. FMJ Ammo is easier to find and a bit less expensive. I also bought a 2 cases of the Lithuanian 308 146gr FMJ ammo, it is boxer primed and non-corrosive and shoot nicely as well. It comes in a sealed wood case in 200 round battle packs.

The above ammo was in addition to 2 cases of .223 and one case of 30 carbine...lol...explains why my knife buying has been curtailed of late.

my bud has one with all the gee gaws on it (ie aimpoint, light, etc) and i like it, it does have some muzzle blast though lol, i didnt find the recoil to be much if any worse than a std M1A though, maybe a little more, but not a night and day differnce, if i had to pick between the std M1A and the SOCOM if i had an M1A already i would get the SOCOM but if i didnt i would probably get the std M1A, depending on what i wanted it for of course, if it was gonna be deployed outta a car for instance the SOCOM would be the only way to fly, while if i wanted it for target shooting the M1A would be the only way to go, if "looks" matter i prefer the SOCOM,

point being it depends on what ya want the thing for.

I would suggest getting a M1A Scout instead of the Socom. I had a friend that had a Scout with a Vortex flash hider and it was a fantastic looking and shooting rifle. IMHO the Scout with it's 18" barrel is the perfect size M1A. I've read a few good reviews of the Prvi Partisan 168gr Match ammo. Check out Aim Surplus for ammo.

I've used both the standard M1A and the SOCOM 16 (same as SOCOM II less the rails) durring training....the standard has more recoil, but the blast from the SOCOM brake is noticable. I like SOCOM myself, but I would agree that you need to look hard at the Scout (it uses the standard gas system, the SOCOM's do not).

Oh yea....
FYI: Springfield get's thier mags from CMI (you can go direct/through a distributor, and get them for about $25 ea.).

Let me know if you need more details....
