First time posting... not sure I am in the right spot??? I just purchased a Sod Buster Jr and I would like to accurately date it... The Tang reads: (first line)Case XX (second line) Stainless USA The reverse side reads 2137 SS

My question is... Is this knife a Pre 1970's or a manufactured in 1980... There are no dots...

Thanks!!!

I'm a little perplexed, as the '65 - '69 tang stamp on the stainless blades (indicated by the 'SS' in the pattern #) is usually in three lines, like this:

CASE XX
STAINLESS
U.S.A.

I also don't think I've ever seen or heard of the small sod buster (Jr.) in Case's line until sometime after 1970. The large one (2138) was introduced in the '65 - '69 period.

My curiosity is (really) hoping to see a pic or two of this one. :)

Aside from the dots (or lack of), does it look anything like the knife on the left, in this pic? (pic is linked from an old BF thread in the Exchange):

(knife pictured is a '9-dot' 1971 version)

Not to highjack your tread but I just picked one of these up at a small local knife show last Saturday and when I got it home I noticed that it was VERY hard to open and the edge was horrible. I guess it's my fault because I didn't take it out of the box and look it over before purchasing it. The guy had two, one was his display and the other (which is the one I bought) was still in the box so I just assumed it was good. The reason for the difficult opening was due to brass filings all in the pivot and in the handle. I cleaned all out that I could and then oiled the pivot real good and worked it open and closed for a while until it smoothed out. Then I had to sharpen it, which didn't take that long and now its pretty sharp. It actually took a better edge than I was expecting.

This is my first Case knife so the link to allaboutpocketknives helped me to. Mine uses the most recent Case stamp and only has two X's left so I'm thinking it was made in 2008, if I'm using the site info correctly. i've been carring it since last Saturday so I guess all in all I like it pretty good.

First... thanks for the replies!! Yes, it looks exactly like the knife on the left, without the dots... Tang reads: (first line)Case XX (second line) Stainless USA The reverse side reads 2137 SS... I have been all over the web trying to figure this out... And cannot get a diffinative answer.. As soon as I can figure out how to insert a photo I will... Thanks...

http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/...mber/31_45.php This link from GENOVICH suggests that both the #37 and 38 were made between 65-69...

The more recent 38 pattern is a 5 5/8" clasp style jack knife that goes by the name sodbuster. It is the same as the 37 pattern Sodbuster Jr. described above, except that it is larger. These were introduced by Case between 1965-1969. Most of them have black composite handles, and some have liner lock mechanisms. When this is the case, the pattern number will be followed by an L.

Can't seem to make your link work (getting 'Not Found' error).

Aside from that, it may be you have one made in the '65 - '69 time frame (maybe LATE in that period), if there aren't any dots. I hadn't ever seen one, or any references to them, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Really would like to see a pic. I'd think that would be a pretty good score, for one of these.

I am pretty sure the '38 pattern (the large one) was introduced first, as the original 'Sod Buster'. Hence the logical naming of the smaller 'Sod Buster Jr.', upon it's release.

Hello David and all those who have offered to help... I have temporarilly put some pictures of my Sod Buster up on my site so you can look at them I hope this works... I am eager to hear what you all have to say!!

That mark definitely looks like it could/should be '65 - '69. Same typeset/font as the '9-dot' 1971 model pictured earlier, but without the dots. As I mentioned earlier, I hadn't seen the particular 2-line arrangement of the mark before, but that's just something new to me. The earlier links in this thread mentioned these came out 'around 1970', so this one may've come on the early side of that time frame. I'd have to think you found yourself a very early one there. Very good.
