Sod Busters

I know this pattern has a lot of history but not sure of the details. Growing up, noone I knew carried a Soddie.

I've had one for a while now and can say it's become attached to me. A standard black Case Jr. I like it's comfort. At first I thought I'd miss a splinter-picker tip but not so.

Can anyone tell me how these were used in the past?
