Well I got a Sodbuster today from SMKW. Came in the same box as my Opinel Garden Knife and only cost $1 more. I've always wanted a SB, my grandad has one, but never got around to it. I opted for the Kissing Kranes Brown Mule. Its 7.5" OAL, 3.5 is carbon steel blade. The dark hardwood scales are really pretty. Its got brass pins and liners. I'm going to refinish the handle, and sand down some burr-feeling edges on the brass liners. But other than that I like this knife. Another winning combination of hardwood, brass, and carbon steel!

I have that exact sodbuster - I got mine from ragnar. I noticed the same things about the burrs on the liners, but it is a really nice looking knife. Once I edged those burrs off and put a bit of shine on the wood, it became a real pretty piece. (not that it wasn't to begin with!)

It's the knife I take with me when I have to wear a suit. :)

Sweet. I've been looking into it between tasks all afternoon. Its got really pretty walnut scales with good figure. I can't believe it was only 7 dollars. I was so close to buying a Case with a plastic handle for 35 dollars. This one is the medium one. I'll surely be buying the small and large. Its just too good a design.

My very first knife when I was 10 years old from my Dad was a Case Sodbuster with the yellow delrin scales. I about wore that knife out. I really liked it a lot and still love that handle material. For a kid it's better than wood IMO. I have no idea what happened to it. Probably busted the blade playing mumblety peg and hitting a rock one too many times.

Kevin,

Cutting performance is going to be better on the Opinel due to the thinner blade. The blade on this knife isn't thick, but is thicker than an Opinel blade. As to quality the opinel took zero work from me right out of the box. On the Sodbuster, I had to sand the gunky half-finish off the wood and do a Watco's treatment. That took 12 minutes. Then I dunked the entire knife in Min Oil. That made the spring action nice and smooth. I sanded the goofy logo off of the blade with a scotchbrite pad. That took a minute or so. Other than that this is a good quality knife for ~7 dollars. It has a nice tight backspring, and the scales are beautiful now (walnut). I'm going to get more. Its really a stunner of a knife with a nice German carbon steel blade.
