I love to take pictures and it shows. I take pictures of everything and download them inot my computer. I have a LOT of pictures. Many of my files are duplicates where I copied them somewhere and could not find them, made backups and filed them somewhere. Now they are scattered over my four networked computers.

Well, my problem is this. I would like to catalog and sort out my pictures, eliminate the duplicates and consolidate them.

I did a search and found that there are 30 THOUSAND images on my computers. Obvioulsy many of these are duplicates, some are bits and pieces of saved eBay ads, etc.

My computer chokes at trying to consolidate these into a file. I just get "not responding" when the "search" feature finds all these images.

I have a 3.2 Ghz Pentium Processor, with a 250gb, 400gb hard disks and 1gb of DDR Ram so I don't think that the computer can be upgraded a lot, and I really don't want to spend a bunch of bucks to upgrade it anyhow.

Does anyone know of a software that will help me organize my pictures and eliminate the duplicates?

I would be much obliged for help!

The Photo Editor of the paper I work for uses this; it is awesome. It's on all the machines.

There are different levels of the program, and free demos... try before buy... we like it a lot.

There's nothing like it for Mac. Bummer.

Bill, if you were on a mac I'd have several suggestions for you. But on the PC side, I'm drawing a blank. Wait... there it is...

Extensis has a program called Portfolio 8... there is a PC version too. Extensis is a decent company.

Also, Image AXS (type that in Google... I think the company is digitalriver or something like that). It is a good program in the Mac version... but they have a PC version that'll work on older systems.

Hope this helps. I'll post more if I think of them...

Bill:

It may be that if you wanted to copy them all onto one hard drive, that during the copy process any duplicate pictures could be culled by just answering NO TO ALL when prompted about duplicate files and do you want to over write them. No additional software needed then.

I might be misunderstanding what you want to do, though.

Kim Kommando had a website that she recommended for this I believe. I downloaded it to my computer and it listed pix I was never aware of having and that I dayumed sure didn't take. I decded I didn't want to fool with it and uninstalled it. I'm trying to recall what the name of it was.:o

I found it!!!! It is called Picasa and is a free download from Google.
Here is a link to the page that tells about it, you can download it from there as well. ;) :D

Edit:
Bill methinks that this will do what you're wanting to do. I may download it again myself and try to organize my pix since my responsibilities have been drastically cut. :D ;)
I really was amazed at the amount of pix on my unit that I had never ever been aware of and at the time it was all somewhat sort of overwhelming for me. It appears to be a really good program and generally Kim doesn't recommend any but the best anyway.
I get a lot of use with her newsletters, the tip of the day and the news of the day, lots of interesting stuff and all free, the price we can all afford.;)

best thing to do is to maintain a specific drive/folder/whatever for your pictures and constantly archive ones that are older than "whatever date".

at least, that's what I do.

I'm like you, Bill....thousands of images on my computer. Now that I have my "new toy"....:D.....just added another thousand over the last couple of days. :o

Thanks for all the replies!

I got both the free Picasa and the ACDSEE programs. While both are really neat programs, I think that I like the ACDSEE a little better, though the Picasa has some very good features also.

Now just have to spend some time organizing pictures....

Have another software that is really handy fro finding duplicates and moving them.

http://noclone.net/

I am amazed by how many duplicates I have on the various home computers. I am clearing a lot of space. Have to be careful NOT to delete any files that should stay where they are, but the majority are image files. Transferring copies of them to a new hard disk where I can sort and delete. Also am using ACDSEE to batch reduce my scrapbook pictures and make good storage on DVDs or a removable HD.

Guess we will have terrabyte storage soon maybe google.
