Hello,

New to the forum, but need some help. I am looking at getting a knife for my son. I am going to have the blade engraved.

I am looking at the Sog Aegis and the Gerber Torch II. The other Choice although more expensive is the the Benchmade Griptillion.

How do Sog and Gerber knives compare? Any comments thoughts suggestions. This will be just an every day carry pocket knife. (Hes in the Army).

Thanks,

Dale

I'd have to go with sog outta those choices , also look into kershaw , buck and spydercos more affordable lines

Softrock,

thanks for the reply, I know nothing about the brand qaulities. I want to get him a good knife, but don't want to break the bank in case he looses it somewheres. So Im trying to stay around $100.00 or less. I am getting the blade engraved with his name and unit on it. Anyone know any good knife engravers?

thanks,

dale

For 50 bucks, go with something a bit sturdier. My suggestion would be the kershaw shallot, JYD II, or Ener-g 2. the steel on all three is easy to sharpen, gets scalpel sharp, and holds a good edge, and they are about the same length as your other two options. the assistance in the shallot is a very simple mechanism that will not gum up easily and is easily disabled. both the the JYD II and the energ II are not assisted, but flip very smoothly.

They are all in your price range. I would lean toward the JYD for Sheer strength, which i would consider to be more important in his situation, but the Energ II and the shallot have their advantages.

Normally I'd recommend checking out a well known auction site for a Kershaw Cyclone for well under 50$, but I'll be damned if I can find one for that price right now. It's been discontinued for a while now and I guess stocks are dwindling...

Still, if you can find it for a decent price (I bought one for around 30$ a little while back), it's a damn sturdy knife. I've been using and abusing one for many moons and it keeps coming back for more. Plus Kershaw builds a very high quality product...I don't think I can always say the same thing for Gerber or SOG, from my (limited) experience.

I know it's more expensive, but a Spyderco Manix 2 is a very nice blade that would be a great option as well. I've been using mine practically non-stop since I got it, and it continues to impress. They seem to run for around 70-80$.

benchmade griptilian would be the toughest out of the ones you mentioned in my opinion.

Is benchmade that much better? I always hear get a benchmade.

I was looking at Kershaw and like the looks of the Kershaw Ram also. I can get 50% off MSRP on any Kershaw knife and 30% off Benchmade MSRP not sure if thats a great deal or not.

One more question, blade type Tanto, Drop point, serrated etc.??

Thanks for the help.

The kershaw ram is a good knife, but i am a bit worried that the locking mechanism would be easier to get gunked up than a liner/framelock. same with the axis lock on the benchmade. i do not know, it just seems to make sense. Stores I would recommend are BladeHQ, Knifeworks, Knifecenter and newgraham. getting 30%-50% off is pretty normal, but is not always the case.

As far as blade shape, a tanto is better for stabbing, and other knives tend to be more suited for cutting. if this is a back-up defense knife, then go tanto. if not, then go for another blade shape. as far as serrations go, i would say they would be a decent idea in this case because he may not have the tools to keep the knife at optimum sharpness in the field, and it is really hard to dull serrations to the point of being unable to cut. This is my opinion, feel free to correct me.

The Aegis is an ok knife, I have one and like it.
Gerber has lost its interest for me. The quality seems to have dropped off considerably.

Honestly, I really don't think I'd bother engraving either.

Of the three you mentioned, the Grip would be the best choice IMHO. And not too much more money. Its a wonderful EDC knife.

As others have mentioned, Kershaws are very good.
Spydercos are excellent.

Hard to recommend other choices without knowing you max price point.

Thanks all, Ive been looking at your suggestions. My son graduates in few weeks from Medic school and a guy has a benchmade griptilian knife engraved with the combat medic logo and custom engraving on the other side for $125.00. I found another place Rocky National that engraves knives also.

Thanks again for all the info.

Sounds like an excellent choice.

Give you son our thanks for his service!

Thanks for all the info. Purchased a couple of knives for myself from a forum member. Lots of nice looking options.

Forget those crap SOGs and Gerbers:barf:. Get the Grip for your son. It is a far superior knife.

Just an update. Purchased a Gerber Torch II for myself. On a couple of occassions I have found the blade partially open while clipped to my pocket. Not good. I purchased a couple of Kershaws and I LOVE them, I by no means, am no expert, but it doesnt even seem in the same league. Again thanks for all the info. This can become addicting.
