Im thinking of buying a sog, arcitech ao1. I have not owned a sog knife since the early 90's.. so I dont know much about the current quality level..can anyone give an update on sog quality..or the arcitech itself..thanks

Don't know about the Arcitech but the general consensus on SOG seems to be that quality is fine but that they're overpriced for the types of steel, and some models are a bit gimmicky.

Personally, in that price range, I'd get something else because it looks fine but I think you could find better performance for that much. Most of what I've been buying lately have been Spydercos.

That said, I'm very happy with my Flash II. The blade came pretty loose but I tightened it and it's fine.

Or if you are looking for a knife with a lock like the arc-lock you might want to look into benchmade's axis lock knives like the 710, 940, 960 and others.

have many b.m.s with axis lock. latest sog was a pentagon elite with arclock. the system does'nt clog up easiley, is very positive & strong. the mecanics of opening takes some different muscle memory if you are used to b.m.s.the heat treat on vg10 is good since i slammed into metal cutting in the garage. the edge did'nt ding. i've found that a rotation of carrying tacts is the best way to become profiecient in quick extraction. i mix up flippers, spydey holes,b.m.s & arclocks.

I've got the model with the bone inlay (Don't remember which bone).
It's a very nicely made knife. The clad-VG10 is a superb steel, with good HT by SOG. I personally find the lock easy to disengage. Fit and finish are really top notch on the model I've got.
Overall a very beautiful, yet very functional knife. A little pricey though.

I had the same version, red bone I believe. As Razorsharp said, the fit and finish are excellent on this one. Blade came very, very sharp, and the action is very smooth with great lockup. I think it is one of the finer knives that SOG does, and apparently they spared nothing in the making of this knife, although I too think it is a little high priced, but if you like it and can buy it......do it!!:thumbup::D

I've been eyeballing that SOG Arcitech in jigged bone. At first glance it seems expensive for what you get. I'd really like to handle one to see if the whole is more than the sum of the parts, but I haven't seen one at a show or shop yet. If the action and fit and finish are as good as reviews say, then this could be a great knife.

Even used, they seem to go for a lot.

My guess is this is the knife they put up for competition for Blade Show's Overall Knife of the Year. They didn't win for it, but it is definitely over-the-top in materials and quality. With the limited production of that knife (not strictly limited to a specific number, just not as many around), it's to be expected to see the higher price tag. I, myself, am scoping out the Carbon Fiber handled one, and hoping for a good deal. I saw a jigged bone one go for $180, and was very tempted. If I ever see one for around $150, that's about ideal.

If they ever do it in Cocobolo wood, I'd have to get it for the going price. I'd put this particular SOG knife on par with the higher-end offerings of Kershaw, like the Tyrade, and Offset.

Just my opinion,
Daniel

This is one of the first threads I've read on Bladeforums where people
actually have something nice to say about SOG. I have a Flash and a Visionary and have no complaints about either. The Arc-Lock takes
a little getting used to when you're more Axis-familiar but it works
just fine.

i think a lot of people saw the early offerings as fairly wild military knives. i know i did & only afew weeks ago looked at the catalog & saw some neat models. bought high end folder & liked it. ordered a spec elite 1 also. they are not as heavy as they appear & mech. works good. notice they do a cryo heat treat on lots of the aus8 which should improve edge durability. the lamanited vg10 is always fairly expensive. mistwalker has a field test on sog creed posted now.

Arcitech = waaaaaaay overpriced. I don't understand why anyone would buy one at that price bracket, especially when there are so many other tools that are just as nice, made just as well, and use better materials, for the same price (or less).

Maybe because they have a different opinion of it than you? Perhaps they have actually handled one and they like it. In fact, they may not care if you understand why they spend their money the way they do. I spend my money for what I like regardless of what anyone else thinks I should or should not buy. After all it is their money.

:)thanks for replying to my question about the arcitech...Im not sold on it yet, Im new to tactical knives..Im an old time case stag handle trapper type of guy..what would you suggest for a knife similar to the arcitech but a better value..I can pick up the arcitech for $216, I value your opinion and help. thanks Tom C

picked up a Spec Elite 1 on tues. love this knife, has vg10 4 in. blade & is super sharp. this is not a dressy one [ black handles] but light for size & can be easiley operated by right or left hand.if you happen to be a 2 knife man i could'nt reccomend a better knife for a righty to be used left handed. opens easier left handed than any i've ever tried. works so well i thought i was left handed.

I have the arcitech in carbon fibre.

It is a queen, so I can't speak to quality with respect to a user, but the fit and finish is excellent, the blade deployment smooth, the lock mechanism seems to work well, and, IMO it is a great looking knife.

If you like the knife it is worth giving consideration to a purchase.

Kevin
