I am collectiong multi-tools now and so far my collection is a LM Wave (my first!) and a Swiss Army Wenger Nail Cliper (that was my moms...) and i am thinking about getting a SOG. Are they a good brand or not? I was also looking into the Swiss Army Vic's Sprit seems pretty good because a few people here has it and they say they like it.

I beleive they are a very good brand. I like many of their fixed blade knives and have had a couple folders that were very functional.

Does the military use their stuff? The website said that "The multi-tools they make are so trustable that the military uses it!" or something similiar to those lines.

Yes, the U.S. military uses multi-tools from most of the major manufacturers (Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, etc.)

I'm a SOG fan. When I need to carry a full sized tool, I go with my SOG powerlock. They are little more cumbersome to use with their flip up wings, and the tools seem to be a little less robust compared to a LM or Vic. However, they are easily swapped, replaced, and cleaned because SOG actually allows you to take the tool apart with standard tools.

I get all kinds of crud in my MT's, but being able to take the SOG apart and scrub it is a big plus. Also, they are mirror polished like the LM tools used to be. I have yet to have my SOG rust or pit on me like my newer LM tools. Granted, this is not a big deal, but it is a plus in my book.

I wonder why the SOG is so expensive though? I mean does the SOG Powerlock ($90 at Target but $105.00 at their official website) has 18tools functions like the LM WAVE? I mean i got my WAVE for a pretty good deal $64.99 and I am wondering if i should spend another $20 bucks more for a tool that has the same or more functions as the WAVE? I used my WAVE yesterday to pull out over 30 nails and it is still working like it is new and i am not sure yet if i want to spend another $20 for the same tool just different brand. I was looking into the Swiss Army Trekker also is that any good? I am able to get it for under $50.00.

Theres only one downside to my WAVE (IT IS NOT THE TOOLS FAULT IT WAS MINES! THE WAVE IS EXCELLENT IT WAS MY FAULT!) is that myself stupidly unexperience with blade sharpening and I sharpened my WAVE and now the blade is pretty much dull.

The SOG Powerlock is a very good multitool. You can buy it on amazon.com for about $70 (including shipping & handling).

Compared to the Powerlock, the LM Wave doesn't even come close in terms of versatility and toughness. Just look at the official site and decide for yourself.

I am really liking the black Powerlock but i dont get whats up with the pivioting points. It is shaped like a can opener...

Woh! I just finish watching their video at their homepage is it true that the blade actualy cut the bullet in half?? or was it like a photoshoped video or something?

I think most blades will be able to do the spitting the bullet in half thing...its more marketing than anything.

I was really in love with the SOG for a while but now I am really not as impressed with it. Too heavy, crude construction, not really as well put together as the Swiss stuff.

The Vic Spirit is my Fav multitool that is plier based....but as EDC I am using a SAK Hunstman Lite.

I'm a Leatherman Wave-a-holic, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, but if push came to shove and I HAD to pick another multitool, or if let's say I lose this one or it breaks or whatever, the Sog is probably the one I'd get. It's a hardcore, tough as nails, built like a tank tool that takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Yes the tools are a little more complicated to gain access to, and they may seem to be a bit small, but be that as it may, it is a very handy an most importantly, RELIABLE tool. Sogs are good to go.

What does "EDC" mean? Also one thing i dont like about the Swiss is their scissors. I find it very uncomfortable to use and the Swiss scissors i have right now isnt realy that good either (compared to my WAVE). Was looking into the Vic's SwissTool seems pretty good is it better then the "Powerlock"?

EDC = Everyday Duty Carry, AFAIK.

I used to have a first-series SOG Power Plier that broke on me while trying to remove a garage door spring. Since then I bought an LM-Surge and never looked back. I guess now they make the SOG a lot tougher, then again most SOG's I see are now more for electrician/electronics use than for heavy outside ab-use.

Just my opinion, though.

The number one thing that I like about my SOG...the freaking pliers don't jam. I don't know what LM did to their line up, but every tool that I have bought after 2004 has had issues with the jaws jamming tight when I try to close the tool. Well, I take that back. My fuse works wonderfully, but the 2004 Wave and the Surge have issue where one side of the jaws mashes itself in between some of the tools so that they cannot slip into closing position. It's very annoying. I know that I could send them back to LM and get them fixed. However, I'm not inclined to do stuff like that. Besides, I use multi-tool pliers several times a day with my line of work. I decided to try something new, and if that didn't work THEN I would send the stuff back to LM. The SOG butterflies open and closed without a hitch. The one thing that I DO miss about the LM tools, is that because of the compound grip, you can't extend one handle up and open with a screw driver tip and lock the other handle down effectively doubling your reach.

I bought my SOG at Lowes for something like 60 bucks with a gift card that I had gotten for Christmas. That's the same price that I paid for my Wave and about 20 bucks cheaper than my Surge.

I know it sounds like i'm hard on LM or that I'm a SOG fanboy. However, I really do like Leatherman as a company and their products. When I don't carry my SOG, I have a LM Crunch on my belt. I keep an old ST200 in my jeep glove box. I gave the 2004 Wave to my friend and co-worker. He doesn't care if he has to fight the pliers. He got a brand new tool for free;). Finally, I use the Surge as my do it all camping/traveling tool box. It's a great tool even if the pliers are sticky.

I have a Sog Powerlock. I have been a Leatherman fanboy for years- because Leatherman was the first, the original; and was decent quality. I love the PST bvecause it is thr original and is so carryable. I didn't really go for the new generation of Leathermans. The pliers on that Leatherman gave-up one day, the joint decided it no longer liked me. I sent that PST in for warranty, and bought a SOG Powerlock. That Sog is so freakin' amazing. It is built like a tank, and heavy as one too. The only thing that I might not be able to do with it, is leave it in my jacket pocket- I need a smaller, lighter solution for that. The pliers are far superior, and the gear mechanism makes opening it much smoother than any Leatherman, and should never surcome to that type of failure that I experienced. The stock Leather sheath for the SOG also runs laps around the Leatherman OEM sheaths, the current ones at least.

However, don't by the SOG as a collectable. It's a user!

Before I purchase the SOG I was wondering does it comes with any extra's? Like when i bought my LM WAVE i got a Sheath for free so I was wondering if the SOG has free extra's like the WAVE. I might not buy the SOG untill a little later because I want to see if the price can be lowered a little (I dont got any gifts cards so I have to pay for the full price...).

They frequently sell on eBay (new) for about $45 to $50 if that helps bring it down a little bit. Sometimes, you can get a used one cheaper, but most people like their SOGs, so you don't see them used often. Lowes, and most ebay sellers, give you a very high quality leather sheath with them. Aside from that, there really isn't anything else that comes free with them. Sometimes they come with a nylon sheath instead.

The only accessory you need to buy is some sockets (for a 1/4" driver)- though most of use have a shitload of those sitting around anyways from various auto repair tool sets anyways.
