So, I just recently got a SOG recon bowie 2.0, and I have to say it's the coolest fixed-blade knife I've ever owned -- it's kind of amazing how the history, balance, grip, lines, and finish conspire to make you to pick it up again and again and again. I haven't really put it through any kind of performance test yet, but eventually when I get less worried about damaging the finish... Still, it's very confidence-inspiring.
So anyway, based on this happy experience, it occurs to me that I couldn't possibly go wrong with a bowie 2.0 for my next purchase (mainly for a little more of the "historical design" buzz with the leather grip, etc.). Except that there is a strange pattern in the reviews. People tend to really like the tech bowie, but reviews of the bowie 2.0 seem very mixed. I am prepared to do some basic waterproofing of the leather if necessary, but you also see references to overall lower quality and bad/surprised experiences when taken outdoors. So I guess I just want to know if I could be setting myself up for disappointment. Any opinions to be had out there?
