As I now have both the standard Sog Bowie and the Recon Bowie (number 050), I thought that I would post some pictures of the two side by side for the forum.

If anybody would like any information on the pair please place questions in this thread.

Ron,

I think that it is a cool knife and goes well with the original Sog Bowie. It is always nice when you order a knife on spec and when they arrive they are better than you expected.

Getting number 50 was a real bonus.

Ed

Ron,

When was the Recon Bowie produced? Will it be available again? I'm saving my pennies for the bowie. I've wanted it for years.

Hi Ben,

The Recon Bowie was just introduced by SOG this year and just began shipping last month. Both Bowies (the SOG Bowie and Recon Bowie) are current models of SOG's and available to the general public.

Ron,

Where can I get one and why isn't it on the SOG web site?

Congratulations on your new purchase, Ed - I'm jealous!
I have a tender question for you, but it's a sincere question. . . I almost didn't post this here 'cause it seemed rude, but perhaps among SOG afficianados is the best place to ask it. <big sigh> That said, I've wanted a SOG bowie forever, but have always balked at the price; the MSRP seems to be nipping into custom territory for a production, albeit a very nice production knife. I wonder if Ed (or Ron or both) could tell me why I should get this over, say, a Randall or similar. Thanks for the input

Hi Virg,

Thanks for your candid comments about the SOG Bowie. MSRP on the SOG Bowie is $274.95 and if you are interested, the MSRP on the SOG Recon is $225.00. While similarly identical (how's that for being clear), these knives, when compared with other manufactured knives, are full of attention to detail, commitment to craftsmanship, and outstanding design...Oh, the visual affect!

Now, talking discounts. If you look long and hard, it might be likely to find these knives 10-30% off MSRP. If you find one more than 30% off, JUMP ON IT! You'll have a steal.

The knife costing too much? It depends on your perspective. The knife can go head-to-head with some custom made knives which may sell for more money. If you handle one, the result is "Awe" in what you're beholding. Just an amazing experience. Many just buy this knife for collecting and presentation. It usually is a halmark piece which is one of the best a person has to show off.

If you are thinking this knife should be $150.00, check out production knives at that price...you won't find even one which comes closed to the detail and fit-and-finish which the SOG Bowie presents.

Is it worth it? I think it would be worth it a even more money!

Thanks for the data, Ron. I didn't say it cost too much, I just wanted to know what I'd be getting over a custom in the same range. If it performs w/the customs, 'nuff said!:-) Like I said, I've wanted one for some time, probably since they came out! I don't know what price I thought would be appropriate for these bowies; your own SEAL team knives are around the $130-150 range, I think, and just the pics show that the SOG bowie is tighter and better finished. I think that the fact that the current SEAL knife has a very similar blade design speaks well for the original design, too. Do people buy these bowies just for collections, or do they some people use them in the woods?

Virg,

As you can see from the pictues, I have a nice pair of Sog Bowies so I believe that they are great knives and value for money.

In terms of build quality they are very, very good. I have a number of other Sog fixed blades including the Tigershark Bowie (there is a theme here somewhere :P) and the Sog 1 and Recon have a much better overall finish with more work involved. For example the leather handle compared to the "plastic" handle.

If you look at the other forums you will see that I also collect Custom folders and I am happy to say that the workmanship and quality of the Sog Bowies is comparable to these.

This is just my humble opinion as a collector - but I hope that it is more objective than that of Ron. (No offence Ron, but who do you work for??

Ed
