Why the two SOG knives? The recon bowie looks a little pointier so better doe sentry removal nice and quiet like and the bowie better for general chores I imagine, but then again why design a general chore bowie when you have ka-bars that fit the bill!! So, why the two SOG knives? What were they designed for in the first place?

Hi Crayola,

Thanks for asking. I just look at them and say, "What beautiful knives you are?" Rather than, "What makes you intended purpose different." We'll, I found out.

Quoting from the same article from the knife designer Ben Baker listed here, http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum55/HTML/000098.html , let me tell you his reasoning.

Here's the images for comparison. SOG Recon is first (the 7" model), SOG Bowie is beneath (the 6" model).

Baker says, "The six inch model was more utilitarian in nature, giving less penetration but producing a bit more damage, according to the results of our tests on pigs."

He goes on to say, "The seven inch 'Recon' was specifically made for SOG's clandestine & cross-boarder recon teams. Fights were close-quarters and vicious, the additional inch wanted by SOG operators for the aforementioned degree of penetration."

Hope this helps. Don't forget about that third Ben Baker knife, the SCUBA/DEMO. Unique, beautiful, and a very rare knife! This adds a knife to the mix of the history of CISO/SOG which often doesn't get talked much about.

What a beautiful pair! It is great that you posted the two pics side-by-side. Thanks Ron. I figured that the recon one was pointy for stabbing easier and the other one was a little more utilitarian. I didn't stop to think that it would also leave a larger wound channel. In Wayne Goddard's new book he showes why a chisel ground "tanto" blade makes a great fighter because the wound channel made from a stab is much larger than with a convex ground drop point and it doesn't close up like the convex groind one either.

Thanks for the info! One day I'll send you my order for a pair. Until then, I'll drool over the pics!

Guy's you have answered the question I just came here to ask, thanks .I really like the look of these, the 6" in particular. Now all have to do is find some cash to enable me to scratch this itch.
Paul.

Paul, you leave me hungry!! What was your question? These two knives are too.... well..., stare at them for a second and you'll agree that they are too ****** for us to drop the discussion about them already

Ok Ron, you had to mention it so no complaining! When are you coming out with the scuba knife? I've loved the design ever since I saw it in Fighting Knives magazine.

And another question. Why the LEATHER spacers for a JUNGLE knife? Or were the originals coated to prevent rotting? Are your replicas coated? Would the handles hold up in South East Asia?

I got the Michael Silvey book on Vietnam Knives a while back and I really liked the look of the CISO recon and the SOG bowie models pictured. I saw a small black and white image of the SOG recon in a mag' and thought ' hmm , that looks good ', there was no more info only a price , which was not out of bounds . So I came to the forum here to seek info on this offering by SOG only to find Crayola had just asked the question and Ron had given a reply with superb images.
There are two books by John Plaster on SOG op's in Vietnam and both are well worth the read.My great admiration for the Guy's who used these tools for real will ensure that one of these ends up in my collection.
Paul

Paul, PLEASE TELL ME MORE about that book!! I was considering buying it soon so I need something to push me over the edge. What's it like? E-mail me if it is too long to post

Thanks!

Hi Bill,

The SCUB/DEMO Knife is an amazingly beautiful knife. I should check with our design team and see if they are interested in working up prototypes for possible inclusion for entrance into our line of knives. Wouldn't that make a beautiful trio?

Take care,

Crayola , can you feel the push from this side of the ocean ? I'm pushing really hard right now !! The Silvey book is worth every penny in my mind .I have had to focus my 'habit' on to one or two main interest areas , Knives of the types used by US forces in the Vietnam conflict is one of these areas.
This book is full of large photo's of Randall's ,SOG Recon's, SOGBowie's,Gerber's
etc etc. The quality of the publication is superb, it really is a fantastic reference.
Given that my chance of ever seeing one of these knives over here is around about zero I felt good about this purchase.
The best I have done so far with regard to 'the real thing ' is a '69 dated Jet pilot's knife. The other items I have collected are right types , just newer.
There is also a new book out by Michael Silvey on WW11 knives , I have not yet looked at a copy, but it will no doubt be as good.
Was that push hard enough ?
Paul.

Man, Its amazing how hard you Brits push! i felt that across the Atlantic and 9/10ths of the way across Canada!!! Payday is at the end of the month so we'll see how hard you pushed!

By the way, NIIIICE knife purchase! Too bad you didn't get 007!

I sure am funny sometimes! Oh, if you stare at your knife instead of your book now, I'll trade you for a sack of loonies and a couple of Mars bars. How's that sound?

Crayola , thanks for the trade offer but reckon I'll pass for the moment . Wasn't 006 played by Sean Bean in whatever Bond movie it was he was in ???
I'm much more like him than Brosnan, honest!
You must be hanging on by just a single finger tip by now.
Cheers , Paul.

NOW you have to go and mention Sean bean!!! I'm going to have to watch some episodes of Sharpe's Rifles this week-end and its all because of you

I thought Brits couldn't pass up a Mars bar? Or is that just the soldiers? LOL!

Crayola ,If you have not seen it I can also recommend 'Bravo Two Zero' Starring the Man Bean, I must admit to a real liking for the 'Sharpe' series too.
So how am I doing so far ? you now have get the book, buy the blade (or two if you don't already have it's SOG Bowie mate) and watch the vid's ; You are going to need all those Mars bars to keep you goig through this weekend.
Paul.

Hi Guys,

Talking about movies,

The SOG Bowie is very nicely shown in Arnold's movie, The Terminator. Linda Hamilton plays with it at a table...some really nice shots!

Sometimes we give knives to movies, hoping for inclusion. In this case, our company president was called by a friend saying, "I just saw Terminator, and your knife was 40' tall on the screen!" That was the first we heard of it.

Ron@SOG

Ron , I promise to use the Scuba/Demo knife ( serial numder 001 ) in my first home movie and Of course I'll send you a free copy as soon as it is released, How about it???
What happens to knives that go out for films , testing etc ? do you get them back or are they written off ?
As a company do you keep examples of all models you produce? I know Randall have a museum of their knives and variants of them.
Do SOG have anything like that?
Paul.

Ron,

Looking at the two knives, how about a version in Damascus? It probably shouldn't increase the price significantly, and there are some pretty good stainless damascus out there now. Spencer could set it up as a pair for the Trident, so you would have a certain "balance" in the line.

Incidently, if John Vincent is still there, tell him Dan the Deming guy says hi.
