well, to add some humor to the question and concept presented by Shaggy .....
the real "secret" to finding the answer to Shaggy's question is to acquire a near-terminal case of Knife Acquisition Syndrome (KAS). Buy anything and everything you can. And while you are in the "A" phase, use and abuse every knife .... hours and hours of use and abuse.

Soon enough you'll reach that near-terminal point. And by that time, one would expect the answer to the original question to be fully self-evident.
Is KAS painful ?? only if you don't have very much money.
Is KAS fun ?? oh yeh, most definitely.
Is KAS a worthwhile endeavor ?? Yes indeed, and with all that knowledge you can write a book, (hopefully) become wealthy, and then with all that money you can really get serious about KAS'ing by moving into the really high-end knives, and begin the cycle all over again.
