I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced themselves or had SOG or a knife expert replace the handle on a SOG bowie type knife(Trident, Tech, Bowie). The reason I ask is because even though I love the look of the black handle on the SOG Tech with Satin finish and the Trident 2.0, I would love to have a satin finish blade with the leather stacked handle. I have seen some pictures of Hattori bowies that have the Stainless guard and pommel with the leather handle and they are very nice. I was thinking about getting another Tech or Trident and see if I could have the handle replaced with the leather. I called SOG and asked but they didn't seem to willing to do this. I was told that all the blades for the Tridents, Bowies, and Techs are the same and only the handle is different. If that is the case it should be pretty straightforward if you had the parts and know how.
You are talking about the Hattori TV-3 which was a stacked leather handled Aus8 blade. They are hard to come by and sell for about $500. While Hattori SOG knives made in Seki have a following, the post 2006 Taiwan made ones do not seem to. But if you are just a fan of the SOG bowie style, you might consider the Bark River/Vehement version:
Thanks for all the suggestions. The hattori TV-2 is what gave me the idea in the first place but way out of my budget right now. I like the bark river knives a lot but they are a little pricey compared to used Techs and Trident 2.0s and I have only seen one or two of their Bowies for sale. Plus I don't really like the brass guards. This is just going to sit in a display cabinet. I really like the SOG but after checking a few custom knife maker's web sites it would actually be more expensive to change the handle on the SOG than just getting the bark river which has a superior blade anyways. Initially when I talked to SOG I was asking if I could send them a trident and a Bowie and have them switch the handles. SOG thought there would be too much liability taking them apart and putting them back together because of the resin. Maybe if I just send them a tech and ask them to replace the handle it would be easy. If someone sent them a Bowie with a damaged handle and needed it replaced it would basically be what I am asking. Hopefully that won't be too expensive. They told me $1 per minute for custom work plus materials.
