SOG Bowie S1 polished tip?

Hello folks, new to the forum and new to SOG knives. I have a question for the collective... I just picked this up and the upper 1/8" of the blade tip is polished shiny. It looks factory but I can't tell if it is a owner modification or not. It does not have an edge... Here's a pic:

My other question is should I stash this or put it to good use, as SOG intended? If it was an original from the war or perhaps if it was serialized, I might put it away. At this point in time, my inclination is to put this on my belt in the field and enjoy the fine Japanese steel...

What do you think?

Here's the other side:

Most sog bowies and even some folders come with semi-sharpened tips, it helps with penetration, and i think it looks cool.

I just took a closer look, it does appear to have a bevel but no real cutting edge... It just caught my eye in the picture and then again in the daylight when I took it out of the box. I'm just glad I found one, getting it local was just icing on the cake...

Hi czdj,

Saw the nice pics of the S1 Bowie you have in the sticky pictures thread! Very, very nice!

The "polished tip" you described and correctly put by supmonkeyface is actually called a "faceted tip" which is a classic SOG Bowie trademark and not a user modification. It is faceted and sharpened a little on the top side and does help in penetration and is very, very pointy indeed. Somewhat like a dagger being double edged.

The knife you have is not an original if it bears SOG's logo as seen in the picture. Do note that the SOG company was set up after the war so it couldn't have been producing the S1's for the troops. :D It is a reproduction.

The knife is meant to be used. However yours looks quite minty and fresh. You could find a not-so-minty one to use out in the field and keep this one as a collector's piece. They're not so easy to find nowadays you know. I've heard great stuff about the SK-5 steel that SOG used. Holds a great edge and is easy to sharpen. I've seen and heard of a few user SK-5 SOGs.

Cheers,
Mark ;)

Thanks for the great explanation, gents! I do understand they're not easy to find, I was getting skunked - globally - and then lucked out and ran across this one.

Thats a really nice one. I had to buy the special edition. I know its more expensive but I had heard a lot of great things about the SK-5 steel. I love mine and although I don't abuse it I do use it and its great. Search for mistwalker's review ....thats a well used good looking Sog bowie.

Thank you, it's good to hear you really like yours. I will have to look up Mistwalkers review.

I'll say: use it, you'll appreciate it even more.

I bought one several years ago and have used it regularly, one of my most-favorite knives. SK-5 steel is very good, I have several SOG's with SK-5 steel and again, they're my favorites.

Cheers,

Carl
