Sog Bowies- how tough?

I am thinking of buying my 1st SOG fixed blade. The Creed or Super bowie have really perked my interest. Are these knives durable? Does the steel hold an edge after skinning deer & bear ? Are these knives durable enough to chop without breaking? Overall - how do you think a Sog Bowie will handle everyday outdoors in the backwoods? I have seen other makes of fixed knives BREAK at chores... (Cold Steel , Buck , Ka Bar).....

They are "Tuff Enuff"! Holds a Dangerous edge, yes it skins great(for a 7 1/2" blade) & slices through flesh like butter. After chopping, batoning, making tinder, still shaving sharp. After an all day chop, clean it off, strop it on some leather, good as new!

If you mean is the tang welded on , no it is made of one piece of steel. If I misunderstood you let me know!

thoughness is no problem. however after chopping the screw on the rear end, that fixes the guard became loose. Unfortunately you need a special tool to tighten it.

I have several SOG bowies and wouldn't trade 'em for anything. They've not been beat-up quite as bad as Carney's, but they are great.
--- "beat-up" = well-used. LOL.

ML100,
I also had the tang nut thingie work itself loose. I gently put the knife into a vise, removed the nut, LocTite'd it, then vigorously tightened the nut using a very small punch held sorta-sideways in the tiny holes while gently tapping on the punch with a hammer. No more loosening problems.

Cheers,

Carl

When I needed to tighten a pommel nut, I used a couple of short pieces of 1/8" brazing rod sharpened down to fit in the holes, and drilled a coupe of 1/8" holes in a small piece of wood and WALLA, custom tool:D

while i have never had my pommel nut on my tech bowie come loose, i DID preempt it not coming loose by dripping in a couple drops of superglue.

i beat on my tech bowie and it holds up great.

fine knives.

What does the tang look like? I have seen some of the rubber handled knives' tangs, and they are of good width and lenght. Or at least the one i saw was. As long as SOG made thier narrow tangs right- and I'd guess they did- you should not have a problem. I had a tigershark for a while, and it was a pretty rugged knife.

I would trust my life to SOG's bowies. I carry a part-serrated Seal Pup Elite as my hunting knife. It gutted a deer and cleaned the skull off with no damage to the edge. Their bowies are well worth the money you pay for them (which isn't all that much on the secondary market).

I would love to see your pictures. :D

I carried and S1 for a decade, awesome knife, extremely tough. I put it through pure hell and it never had any issues at all! I've put the Super Bowie through some rough paces too and as with the original no issues at all. They are definitely great knives!
