SOG Creed Blade Redesign - Why?

Why did SOG redesign the blade on the Creed. I really liked the original design with the widened and sloped blade near the guard. Now it has been make thinner and the slope has been removed and is straight like other knives. Sorta removes the character that the design had for the Creed. I may not have bought it if I knew the blade was changed. It is not on any of the marketing material or pictures in the SOG web site. I thought it was possibly a counterfeit at first until SOG customer service assured me that it was the real deal.

Does anyone know?

I don't know, I wanted one but to me the handle seemed short, that is what they should have fixed, not the blade profile.

LAViking,

you got a pic of this new version of the Creed? SOG's website does not show a change that I can see!

The blade was changed to accommodate a requirement for importation into Russia. They have laws against crossguards on most knives and we had to do a version with out the crossguard. When the crossguard is removed the angled part of the blade would be sticking out and not function properly. It was not just some random change. I hope this explains it and we are in the process of updating the website to reflect this change.

Ok! I see the change now with the updated pics, no big deal, blade overall looks the same minus the one change.

so what happened to the older creeds? having a sale on them to clear them out?! a bladeforums only sale?! come on throw a dog a bone!

You redesigned the knife for Russia? Really? Do you sell that many more on Russia than in the US? I have an older Creed and I really like it, second only to my Becker CU7 as a chopper, just needs a kydex or nylon sheath. If you really sell that many in Russia, you could afford to make a Russia-only version. So now, besides all of your product made in the PRC, this makes me less likely to buy more SOG products. Too bad, I've read complaints about SOG's customer service yet I had great service on a Power Plier in '02 when required. Priorities...

Yes, we sell a significant amount of knives to Russia. We did a modification to the knife that allowed us to do a Russian version of it without the cross guard. There are many factors at play here and at the end of the day we felt that the change required for the Creed was not detrimental to the overall performance of the knife and would allow us to expand our market for this product. If you think that working with our customers to make product that conform to their specific laws for a country so that they can sell it, is bad and we have somehow lost direction. Then I am sorry to hear that but we are working to make and sell great knives.

So now, besides all of your product made in the PRC, this makes me less likely to buy more SOG products.

In regards to the PRC comment, which is completely false. Less 30% of our products are made in the China. The remainder are made in Taiwan, Japan and the USA, with a majority of these coming from the USA. We still have a significant work force here in Lynnwood, WA and will continue to work to make the best products we can. Regardless of the country of origin all our of products have a lifetime warranty and if you have any problems with them we are happy to have the customer send them back for warranty work.

We have had some hiccups with our customer service over the past couple years. I would wager that most of the unsatisfied people that have posted here have been contacted by either me or our customer service team and their issues have been resolved. They just never go back and adjust the posts. See Also how about the people that send the products in everyday and we repair/replace them are normal procedure and you never hear from them because we did everything right.

In closing we value customers opinions and thoughts and work to make everyone that we can happy. Thanks for your past purchases and I hope that there will be more items from SOG that you just can't live without.

Thanks
Chris

I like your products and comtemplating purchasing a couple of your knives right now. I have no problems with Taiwan, Japan or US made knives, but searching through your website it's hard to find USA made knives. What or where are the US knives which make up the majority of your product line?

Thanks

All of our assisted opening knives and multi-tools, these make up about 30% of our SKU count.

Some models are the Flash II, Aegis, Trident, Twitch II and PowerLock.

Chris,
Poor choice of words on my part, I know that not all of SOG's products are produced in the PRC, but I know that a percentage comes from there. I'm surprised that it's as low as 30% as it seems that most of what I look at from SOG in catalogs or in person seems to be Chinese. US, Germany, Japan, Taiwan not an issue for me, but I'd personally prefer to see more work going to your Lynnwood folks than those overseas. But are there enough Americans buying Creeds that the original design had to be changed for the number of Russians that buy them? Is there room for both? If SOG sells that many to Russians and Americans, then I'd suggest that there is. That was my point; I have no problem with adjusting for the customers.

And while some slam your customer service, I didn't have any issues. I learned that the early Power Plier will cut concertina wire but the jaws will bend just enough to prevent the plies from closing properly. I E-mailed SOG, asked if it constituted abuse. I was told "no", so I sent it to SOG and I got it back with new jaws.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply!

They redesigned the blade to reduce their overall manufacturing costs, would be my guess. It's better financial business acumen to have one blank that will work on both knives compared to producing different blanks.

Old thread i know but i would love to see a pic of the Russian Creed without crossguard.
Actually i love the look of the SOG fixed blades but have often wondered what they would look like without at least the top part of the guard. I have a SOG Trident but i'm not going to mod it just to quench my curiosity, lol.
Practical functionality should be improved by the removal of the top part of the guard. Anybody out there mod any of their SOGs in this fashion?
