I just received my SOG CrossCut less than an hour ago, and comparing it to my Leatherman Micra, I find that I like the CrossCut ALOT better.
Here is why*:

*Although they are about the same size (the CrossCut is a little thicker), the sissors of the CrossCut are quite a bit larger and sturdier-looking. They are also smoother to open, close, and use, due to the "gears".

*The knife-blade of the CrossCut is wider with more "belly", and has a better "nail-nick" to open it with (actually it's a cut-out).

*The file of the CrossCut is ALOT more aggressive, where the one on the Micra is something like that found on fingernail clippers...Not useful for anything BUT fingernails, where the one of the CrossCut IS a file.

*The tweezers of the CrossCut are larger, wider, and have a nice slant bevel to them at the tip.

*The small and "large" screwdrivers are about the same, but one thing that the CrossCut DOES lack is the phillips screwdriver that the Micra has. In it's place is a plastic (tooth)pick. I think SOG should take a look at changing this, or offer a "phillips" as an option.

*Also, the CrossCut comes in a nice vinyl pouch, where the Micra doesn't.

As funds permit, I might just have to buy one of these CrossCuts for my wife, as her eyes lit-up when she watched me open MINE from the packaging it came in.:).

SOGman,
Why don't you just buy yourself a new one...:p Face it, the wife will get this one...

Naw...This CrossCut IS MINE!...(Actually I have a NIB Pocket PowerPlier "on the way" that I'm THINKING about letting her "use" when it gets here, as the little CrossCut is just too small as a "primary" multi-tool---(I'll also carry my PowerLock ALONG with my CrossCut, and another folder)...For now she has one of my ParaTools in her purse.).:).

And pictures??? I don't have one, and I STILL haven't taken the time to figure-out the photo softwear that came with my digital camera...:D.

Funny you should mentioned it. I actually use the finer file on the Powerlock as a nail file today because one of my nails are really bugging me. I did it on the bus and I'm sure I kinda surprised some of the ladies sitting across from me ;)

no comparison with the crosscuts and the micras. Not to bash the micra but the crosscuts are a far better product

I'm going against the grain on this one. This is the only time that LM ever beat out SOG for me. I actually found the Micra to cut a lot better than the Crosscut. I mean paper, bits of small cord and other things that I could find around the store.

I only tried out one of each so it could've been that I just got a 'bad' SOG and a 'good' Leatherman.

Also I found that the 'gears' of the compound leverage was always getting caught on loose threads and things in my pocket.

One thing about the Crosscut though is that the spring on the compound leverage never got jammed up as much as the spring tension on the Mirca. Had to constantly lube that thing when I had it.

Yes, you did find a bad CrossCut. Our standard for cutting is that it is to cut toilet paper and rubber bands (harder than you might think). Please feel free to return yours for warranty with our sincerest apologies!

Only area I've noticed on the Crosscut is for very fine cutting -like a hangnail- or equivalent. Then the finer tips of the LM let you get closer. For anything else, the SOG's heavier blades make short work of it.

As far as the gears getting caught, either use the pouch, or (better yet) get one of Eric's (Normark - On Scene Tactical) kydex sheaths for it, like Ron has...

Ron and Bobby thanks as always for your replies and help. I should clarify that I don't own the crosscut. I just carried it in and around the store at work (work part-time at a knife store) for a few days just to test it alongside the Micra before I made the purchase.

This is blasphemy on this forum but after all that I ended up buying the Micra:eek:

Actually over the next few months I ended buying something like 10 and giving them away as gifts.

Alright go ahead!! Ban me from this forum!!! (but be warned I'll just open a new account and come back as someone else!!!):D

Hey BOK,

If I ban you, I'll have to ban myself, too. :) I own a handful of Leatherman products and have two Micras here at my desk (at SOG). They certainly are a fine tool.

Don't worry. You're a friend of SOG and always welcome here!

It just sounds like your "sample" was a lemon, 'cuz it should perform much better than you indicated. We try to have real good QC, but misfits do slip through.

...That's alright, Ron...I WON'T tell Spencer about this, IF you start bugging him about that Pocket PowerLock for me.:D.:D.

Good thread! I'd wondered about the CrossCut vs Micra myself, in the area of the scissors. Long ago I'd heard the Micra's scissors work on more materials, but I'm not sure my Micra will handle toilet paper or rubber bands. Could someone with a micra and crosscut try this one: moleskin. I vaguely recall trying my Micra out on moleskin with disappointing results.

I just tried my Micra on toilet paper and tissue paper ... it ends up separating them, but I'm not sure it's not just ripping the paper in a straight line. It cuts rubber bands easily if I do a quick motion, won't cut all the way if I do it slowly.

The one killer for the Crosscut is lack of a phillips screwdriver. If Leatherman didn't somehow patent their two-bladed phillips screwdriver, SOG should definitely slap one on the Crosscut. For me, the lack of a phillips screwdriver immediately removes the Crosscut from consideration -- the screwdrivers are among the most-used tools on my Micra, and the phillips gets a lot of use.

Hi Joe,

Great to see you visiting here! Please don't be a stranger!

We do have a "two bladed phillips" in our CrossGrip. I think it might be able to be retrofitted into a CrossCut if someone wanted. We felt the toothpick was more appropriate for the customers most likely to use this product.

Ron,

I WANT!! (See my original post at the top of this thread.).:).

Ron,

Yes, it fits just fine, and is quite an improvement, as I just couldn't see a real good use for the plastic "pick"...Thank-You!.:D.

Edited to add: Because of the thickness of the base of the plastic pick that this phillips screwdriver replaced, it isn't a standard "two-bladed phillips" that was installed, but rather a "one-bladed phillips" like that of the Micra.
