SOG "Custom Shop"?

Hi all,

I've recently gotten the lust for a Bowie. I really like the SOG S1, especially the contours and faceting of the blade.

My dream knife at this point would be the S1 Bowie with the hardware from the Recon Bowie: The brass guard and pommel cap. Is there any way that I could get a knife with these parts from SOG? If so, (about) what would it cost me?

I'm assuming I could always do it myself; Get both, disassemble them, reassemble as I want, and then sell the Recon Bowie with black metal parts. Not realistic, but it probably could be done.

I may just take the easy way out and get the Trident. No "colors" to worry about, and the bluing won't scratch off the blade (assuming I'd ever use my "dream knife"). I know where I can get one for $175 right now, too... But I keep thinking that the carbon steel in the S1 will get sharper. Opinions?

Hi ParaGlock,

You do ask the impossible! ;) Unfortunately for you (and I'm sure a few others), SOG does not have a "custom shop" from which you can get that one-of-a-kind "Bowie-Recon hybrid."

I would not recommend the weekend home project "Frankenstein" knife, either. [People say I'm no fun! :) ] Beside voiding the warranty (a statement for which I'm famous!), the complications are countless and it may simply be impossible. I'll name the top few complications that come to mind. The blades are different thicknesses, so the crossguard you want will be too narrow for the super thick Bowie blade. The leather washers making the handle, once taken off, never look good put back on (if you know exactly what you're doing in the refinishing process, you might have a fighting chance). The butt caps are soldered on, so they are nearly impossible to get off without damaging the spanner nut, or something worse. I just don't think you'd be happy with the result.

The Trident is a great knife. Actually, all three knives you've mentioned are all truly outstanding in fit-and-finish and rate perfect "10s" in drool factor. The SK-5 carbon steel will be a better steel as you have stated, but does require more maintenance to prevent rusting. Sounds like you have a tough decision to make. :) How 'bout one of each? ;)

By the way, nice gun choices. Which is your preference? Para Ordinance or Glock? I have a Glock 27 for my daily carry and love it. I also have a SigPro in .40 can't say enough good about it. My next gun will likely be a 1911 style and Para Ordinance is on my short list.

If you have any other questions, ask away.

Thanks for the response, Ron. At least it was worth a shot, so to speak.

At this point the Trident is getting the nod, but I obviously need to do some more reading and looking around anyway. Bowies are a big subject, in several ways.

As for the other stuff, my preference goes back and forth between the two, depending on which I shot last. I've always had a thing for 1911s, and got a Para C7.45 LDA as soon as I saw one. It's all stainless (much like the Trident - hmmm...) and I found it got a bit heavy, so I sought out something small and light, and ended up with a Glock G36. Great gun.

The Para is beautiful, shoots well, and carries well, despite its weight. The Glock has all those traits as well as a simple, elegant mechanism that is incredibly easy to maintain. And hey share at least one other trait: A consistant trigger across shots; No DA/SA. (And no cocked & locked on the 1911.) And the Glock's looks grow on you.

I know! How about one of each? :) :) See? I couldn't decide about guns, either. :D

And darn, that SOG Tech looks pretty cool, too.

So is it safe to say that the S2 Trident is more of a "user" and the S1 Bowie is more of a "collector/keeper"? How badly does the bluing scratch in use? Can you touch it up with Super Blue, like traditional gunmetal? Or does it then look like touched up scratches?

It's getting down to the wire. I've had some free time to look around, and there are just so many Bowie options. Big, small, choppers, fighters, Frost/fantasy blades :barf: , the "manufactured collectables" of Franklin Mint  , etc, etc. With all these options the SOG still gets the nod, at least at this point. Yeah, it's expensive, but I want something nicer than a $40 wannabe.

Hi ParaGlock,

A "collection" vs. a "using" knife is a personal decision. Both these knives are both attractive and capable. The coating on the Bowie is good, but if you're really hard on knives, it will scratch or fade. The Bowies I've handled that have seen a fair amount of field use actually look good, having "character." Personally, I wouldn't feel the need to touch it up.

Ron,

Try the H&K .45 USP Compact! I have carried ALOT of pistols ALOT of the time for the last 12 years of my life and this is by far the most versitle and awsome pistol I've ever owned! I'm issued a SIG P220 in .45 and my backup is a Glock 30. BUT for off duty carry, its the USP! ESPECIALLY if you are around children. The glock is just to dangerous to leave chambered if there is ANY remote chance someone else might ever get it. Unless you are going to leave it in a triple security holster.. The H&K is double action and can be carried "Cocked and Locked" with a safty on!!! Its awsome!! I'll make a deal with you, buy it, try it and if you dont love it, I'll help you sell it for whatever you payed for it!! Within reason of course..;)

Hi Danny,

H&K is a brand I've been wanting! It's on my short list of guns to buy! Too many guns...not enough money!
